As you all know there was a thread about Catoosa antler restrictions. Although I know they are not the best method for managing deer, this deer is a great example of a deer that benefitted from them. I had several shots at him on our property last year and thought about shooting him because I thought he was 3 1/2 but I am glad I didn't. Do you all think he is 4 now?

First, how do you know it's the same buck?

Second, did Antler Restrictions save the buck last year or did voluntary hunter selectivity save the buck?
 
I have 1000 pics of this guy from last year. Pretty sure it is the same deer based on the brow tines and shape of the rack. For me it was age but this deer lives in Catoosa. Obviously I have no idea if people on Catoosa saw him last year but assuming someone did he would have been illegal to shoot.
 
It might be him, but I'm not convinced. Yes, his brow-tines match, but lots of bucks have similar brow-tines to that. The sweep of the right beam doesn't match, but hard to say on young bucks. Not sure he would fully recover on his left side from what he was last year to this year. I would expect him to still display some deformation of his left antler.

But I do agree that, for the Catoosa area, that's a 2 1/2 year-old last year and a 3 1/2 year-old this year.

It could easily be the same deer and it could easily be a different deer. I would guess he is 3.5.

Maybe that buck did get protected, but think of all of those above average 2.5s that didn't
 
Hopefully he will show up more this week and I will have more pics to compare. Thanks for the insight. Always enjoy seeing what others have to say about the bucks I have on camera. While you are in the discussion BSK, I have noticed the deer on our farm seem to be farther along that other deer. For example I had a mature buck show up the first week of December last year. He seemed to be healthy but lost his horns December the 15th. And during the summer the bucks here become fully developed way before other parts of the state. Also I saw our target buck, a 5 year old, chasing a doe yesterday as hard as he could. Any explanation of this?
 
Master chief I agree about the 2 year Olds that don't get protected. Last year alone I had pics of at least five 2 year olds that could have easily been shot on Catoosa. I wish they could restrict the age of deer there but just don't see it as a possibility.

Very interesting stuff tanelston. Unquestionably I've seen local properties with odd timings for the region. But I suspect you may be seeing the false rut right now. Bucks do a lot of chasing during the false rut, which occurs about 28-30 days before the real rut. Or it could be that a doe actually has come in to estrus. That's not unheard of for October. But considering he was chasing hard makes me lean towards the false rut. If she were truly in estrus, the two of them would be performing the white-tailed "mating dance" of her skittering ahead, he following behind--head low, constantly grunting--until he's almost caught her, then she skitters ahead again. Although it's not officially named as such, whitetail deer definitely have a distinct, ritualized mating "dance."

Early antler drop is almost always linked to stress. And that stress could be due to anything from heavy breeding activity to nutritional deficiencies. It's not uncommon to see the most aggressive breeders lose antlers long before other bucks in the same area.

Who says smaller-antler bucks pass on "subpar" genetics? That has not been scientifically establish at all. In fact, they may be contributing little to nothing to their sons' antler sizes or shapes.

so your telling me you think a small 80 inch 3.5 year old deer isn't passing his genetics on to his son? then so tell me what is he passing to his off spring.
 
O ok thanks. I knew immature bucks would chase does before they are ready but had never witnessed a mature buck participate. I know they are laying down a lot of sign right now and seem to be on their feet alot. And as far as this deer having poor genetics, if he is indeed a 3 year old he is above average for our area. We have only had 2 deer be in the 140s or 150s in the last few years show up on camera and have had several deer that were at least 5.5. Killed a deer last year that was no doubt at least 5.5 and was lucky to break 110. We try to manage the genetics but without a good food source it has been difficult to get any deer out of the 130s.
 
There's wildlife science, and then there's genetics according to knightrider.

You may well be able to improve or degrade antler genetics behind a fence when you know the genetic makeup of the animals involved and who mated with who to produce each fawn. But all of this is unknown.

No Fence= gene flow, bucks and does leave/enter
injury, age, nutrition, birthdate can all prevent a deer from showing its "genetic potential".
Then there's the does.

How do you know he has poor antler genes? Antler size is a effected many things, only one of which is genetics. You will not know the genetic (antler) potential of a buck until it is completely physically mature (4.5) and by then he has passed his genes on already.

This is assuming the buck is otherwise healthy.

Two major points to consider knightrider:

First, how much of an 80-class 3 1/2 year-old buck's antler size is due to genetics? Probably very little. Almost no buck in the wild ever grows the antlers he is genetically capable of. Often a HUGE difference exists between genetic potential and actual expression (what a buck actually grows). In the wild, the stresses of life (breeding, fighting, fighting off diseases, seasonal nutritional stresses, social stresses, etc.) all reduce actual antler growth versus what a buck could grow under optimal conditions. This can be shown by taking a buck out of the wild and raising him under optimal conditions. Invariably this produces a massive surge in antler growth. If a buck's current antler size is genetic, changing his living conditions would produce no changes in antler size. Unless a buck is raised in absolutely optimal conditions (and no buck in the wild is), and to full maturity, you cannot say what part of his antler size is genetic.

Second, we don't know how the genetics of antlers work. However, what we do know--from penned studies where who bred who (parentage) is tightly controlled--bucks do not produce male offspring with antlers that look anything like their father's, either in size or shape. That doesn't mean bucks are not providing genetic antler characteristics to their male offspring, it just means we can't determine what they are passing on yet. Until the genetic code for antlers is deciphered, we won't know how it all works.

The point being, you cannot alter the genetic make-up of a free-ranging deer herd. "Culling" bucks with a particular antler size or shape makes no difference in future antler production in the area. This has been tried in studies and found to be of no biological impact. In fact, it is often found to be of more harm than good, as removing bucks for dubious reasons simply means less bucks in the area (lower buck age structure and poorer adult sex ratio).

If a doe 'smells right," she will be pursued. And personally, I believe that is what the "false rut" is all about--some does go through a "false" estrus cycle 28-30 days prior to their real estrus cycle, hence they "smell right" and bucks act accordingly.

Sounds like a very normal deer herd for the area. Antler growth is closely tied to local nutritional and physical/social stress levels. It is normal in rugged hardwood regions for bucks in TN to only average 100-120 gross at full maturity. It is also normal for only a small percentage to ever grow 140+ antlers. Now move into the best soil and habitat regions of the state (lots of agriculture grown in the best-quality soils) and antler growth with age improves dramatically. In the agricultural sections of the Nashville Basin, the average antler growth of bucks at maturity improves to somewhere in the 130s, and 150+ bucks are more common. It's all about nutrition, and that is driven by soil and habitat quality.
