I know it's hard to say for sure but do you think this buck's right side will come back normal next year? He doesn't have any noticeable leg injuries or anything. Is it more likely that he damaged it during early summer or that it is a gentic trait?

Looks like a pedicle injury to me. If it is a pedicle injury, it is permanent.

If it is due to a body injury or injury to the growing antler, it could disappear with age.

What makes you think it is a pedicle injury?

I have a couple of mature deer this year that have messed up antlers on one side and was wondering if they will be like this again next year.

The clump of "junk" near the base and the long spike beam. Pedicle injuries are notorious for producing "spike on one side" antlers.

Pedicle injuries are also far more common than hunters realize. Now that trail-cameras have seen such popular use, I see pictures of hundreds such bucks every year. My email box is full of such pictures right now. Everyone wants to know "What's wrong with this buck? Should I cull him?"

This is THE MOST commonly asked question I get.
 
Thanks BSK. I was affraid that would be your answer. We let this deer walk last year as a perfect 10 because we thought he had potential to be a real stud. I guess he'll get one more free pass to see if his antler issue is permanant.

I'd be more worried about the buck in the foreground... that deer has got some seriously pitiful antlers.

I know you can't age the deer in the foreground, but on my farms, bachelor groups usually don't differ by more than 1 year... ie, it would be very unusual for a 3.5 yr old buck (as the buck you are concerned about), running with a 1.5 yr old...

So I think the buck in the foreground is at least 2.5 based on his companion.

I'd definetly pass the buck you're concerned about this year and give him one more year (unless you had identifiable pics of him last year as a 2.5), and kill the heck out of the buck in the foreground if he ends up looking to be 3.5 in other pics.
 
He would get one year of pass from me and if he showed up again next year with that look he would be on the "list".

it is common around here to see older bucks with much younger bucks. i saw an at least 4.5 yr old 8 pt last year running with a basket 6 pt, a spike and a button.
if not for the button, the 8 pt might be hanging in the living room.
 
I have a nice 2.5 year old would be 8 point running around where I hunt. Very close looking to the picture you posted just a year younger. Have not seen any other deer out there in 5 plus years like it so I am hoping it was just an injury also.
