I put 2 in the same spot every year since 2004. The hole is so big you can hide a 4 wheeler in it. My question: the hole holds water alot and rocks dissolve quick. Do I need to keep putting them in hole or should they be on top of something? Like a stump or homemade platform.
 
Now that you have it established, I would just dump some minerals in it every March and then again in July. They will continue to use it even if you do nothing, but you will get more activity if you put some minerals in it.

I have a couple of licks that started off with trophy rocks that are now bigger than the bed of my truck. Great early season spots!

I place mine outside of the hole. The rocks will melt too fast if placed in the waterhole.

See the rock perched above the hole? Rain run-off from the rock still flows and accumulates in the hole.

Excellent idea!!! I've got an established "salt lick" which is now a very large hole full of water. The deer still use it but a trophy rock won't last long in the standing water and over time all the rain dilutes the water in the hole.
My Grandson got me a trophy rock for Christmas and I'm going to try Stik's homemade stump trick out.
 
I pour my loose salt around the perimeter of the big holes created previously from the deer using the salt licks.
