Are all threads on surpressors universal?

Say a man bought one for a Ruger 10/22.
Would you have to thread the end of the barrel and then buy an adaptor to go between the barrel and surpressor?
I just figure the female threads of a surpressor would be larger than the O.D. of the stock barrel, not to mention the taper of the barrel that would have to be accounted for.

Mainly just pondering the question that was brought up at work this morning.
Guy was wondering how you would go about putting one on a tapered barrel that is smaller than the female threads.

If I was going to put one on anything I believe it would be a .44 mag.
