Another sighting in question

I didn't want to hijack the other valuable sighting in thread.

For muzzleloader I hunt with my "primitive" black powder TN rifle. Obviously iron sights. I'm right handed, but my strong eye is my left so I use my left eye. When I hunt or shoot with my scoped Model 70, I have to use my right eye as I can't manipulate my neck and head to see through the scope with my left eye. But for the smoke pole, I use my strong left eye. I can shoot nice tight groups with the Model 70, but I'm consistently high with the old smoke pole. Now that's probably due to the scope and modern rifle vs. iron sights and a primitive rifle, but I got to wondering if it might have something to do with using my left eye when I shoot the muzzleloader. Any validity to this thinking?

Yes, sounds weird I know. And I think this might be causing me to hit high.

I'm blind in my right eye I shoot everything with my left and I'm right handed

I have had to deal with this issue several times, but mostly shotgun and pistol shooters. In my experience I have never had anyone be a consistent/accurate shooter while using the wrong eye for the hand of choice. The 2 solutions I have seen work are to learn the other hand or force the other eye. The eye has been an easier solution in my cases. I would tape the lens of a pair of safety glasses on the eye you do not want to be dominant, and then shoot like that until it becomes mussel memory. Good luck!!

I've tried shooting with the left eye while shooting right handed. I'm not a contortionist. I don't see how you can do it. I can shoot with the left eye shooting left handed .

I just had to go try what you described. My wife's little caplock had a pretty good drop in the stock and I was able to get my head far enough down on it to see the sights with my left eye. On my .40 flintlock there was no way.... the stock is just too straight for your method to work. Also, my wife is a right handed shooter but left eye dominate and she has always been able to shoot decently this way. If you are consistently high, then maybe you should just adjust your sights. Since you are high your front sight needs a higher blade to shoot lower or if you have a tall enough rear sight, file it down a little to make it shoot lower.

In the Marine Corp in Recon school we had a few guys that had the same problem. Its possible to change your dominate eye. Cover that left eye with an eye patch when you shoot. Shoot often. Wear it when your around the house and practice focusing with only your right eye. It will take over but it takes several weeks and a few headaches.

If you want to shoot right hand then shut your left eye or use a patch. My dad, myself, son and daughter are all left eye dominant. When I was younger I would shot either hand but got use to right and closing my left eye. I found out a few weeks ago during my process for Lasik, that I start off left eye but move to right eye taking over now. My son shoots left handed although he will shoot right sometimes now that he older. My daughter shoots right with a patch but she is unable to close her left eye without closing her right. Good luck, You can make a patch like my daughter.
