as you read in my other post i was looking at buying a pistol kit . but i have a offer to buy a cap and ball revolver , its a 1858 remington 44 5.5 inch barrel .has some ammo ,caps ,extra cylinder, for 200 dollers i have only saw pics but it looks like its in great shape .i dont know much about these guns and its not they way i was going to go at first but i am not sure really just want your thoughts on it ?? wanting something to carry along with my 45 cherokee muzzleloader during deer season.

I have two cap n ball revolvers both .44 cal

One blued with 6" barrel and the other SS with a 12" barrel.

If you are set on the .45 to match your Cherokee, then I would do that. But, a multi shot .44 revolver is pretty cool as well.

If I am not mistaken, Nimrod has taken deer with his or dispatched them with it.

They are no different than any other BP weapon, check the bore and cyl(s) for pitting. Also, check the nipples to make sure they are not mushroomed (nipples can be replaced with new)

If clean, that is a so-so price..................borderline high.

Keep in mind that you will need two different ball sizes for your cherokee and the remington. If you are looking for conveniance this might be of some concern. I think your rifle would be using .440/.445 balls while you'll probably need at least a .454 for the revolver.

Another thing to consider is that the remington's powder capacity renders it somewhat on the weak side. For finishing one off it might be ok but why not just reload the rifle and do the same thing. That way you don't have to wag a pistol around too.

If you're wanting to actually hunt a deer with a BP pistol I'd go with at least a .50 in a single shot. With a revolver I'd save my money and look for a Ruger Old Army or a Walker Colt repro. They both hold a lot more powder and are capable of producing 45 colt like results.

u guys are makeing me rethink this now. if it want kill a deer say 20 to 30 yards i dont need it

I got some data from a former member here that did some shooting/testing with his

He chrono'd two different powders

first load was 30gr of pyrodex, 185 gr. pistol conical bullet, 700 fps

second load was 30gr of 777 loose, same bullet, 800 fps.

I will not print the remainder of the data, it was outside the manufactures recommendations and don't want someone attempting to duplicate.

PS: it was noted, his pistol was one of the cheaper Italian made ones, the heavier more well made pistols will take 50gr. charge and the results would be much better.
