Found a Remington 1100 2 3/4 chamber in very good condition. Paid $299 for it. It has a slug barrel with rifle sights which I don't want. Want to use for bird gun. I already have 2 1187 w/ Rem chokes and 2 870's with Rem Chokes. I am thinking about a 30 inch plain barrel modified choke. Any thoughts? Don't really want a full choke. Guy in Memphis will give me $50 for my slug barrel and his barrel is $160. Anybody have any experience w/ 30 inch barrel?
 
Most people dont know about barrel lengths.. I didnt and years ago when I bought my citori I got a 26 in barrels.. hindsight.. 28 to a 32.. my daughter shoots a 34 inch barrel on her trap gun, the very top skeet shooters.. 32-34 inch barrel.. one of the main things a longer barrel does is give you follow through.,. once you get the barrel moving its harder to stop a longer barrel vs a shorter barrel.. after being a shotgun coach for 4h,and sctp I have learned to spot things the average guy misses... it is very very very easy to stop your swing when shooting moving targets with a shotgun.. hence.. you will shoot behind the target every single time.. unless you just happen to be a terrible shot and had about 6' of lead built into swing.. go ahead and get it.. you will like it..
 
I love the longer tubes myself, had a Browning Gold "POS" Stalker with 30" tube. It was a duck and doves worst nightmare, till it puked. The new Browning A-5 is available in 30" as well, great pointing gun, we`ll have to wait and see about durability on that model.

I see what you are saying but I love my Citori 20g in 26", but I am/was mostly a grouse hunter and shoot skeet and cylinder chokes anyway in that brush.
 
I want my short 24in barrel for turkeys a 30in for doves and ducks and something in between for rabbits, squirrels and quail.

Thanks for the input. I have heard the 30" barrel was good for the older 1100's. I have 28" 26" and 24" barrels for my 1187's and 870's. Just curious I have heard most trap shooters use full choke barrel's.
 
That barrel will be fine. It will swing well, too. I have a 30" barrel on my 1100 for clays games. EVERY novice shooter who tries it shoots better with it.

The top skeet shooters use longer barrels, but they aren't shooting semi-autos.
 
Trap shooters like long barrels but I believe skeet barrels are usually shorter due to the fact that you have stop your swing so quickly and change directions on your doubles. Therefore you dont want a heavy barrel that is harder to stop. Every skeet branded gun I have seen has a 26" barrel, but then again I have not seen them all.
BTW, if you dont believe me, go to gunbroker and type in Remington 1100 skeet. Every gun listed for sale has either a 25" or 26" barrel.
