Another muzzleloading season thread

Should bowhunters be limited to recurves only without sights?
Just as valid a question.

Optical sights are almost a necessity for many aging deer hunters, plus they allow for safer hunting since both the target and background can be more clearly seen. I suspect optical sights have saved many human lives.

Why can't the rules and regulations stay how they are ? If you want to hunt during bow season get a bow. Same goes for muzzleloader and gun. If you don't want to use a scope than don't use one. Next thing you know there will be a thread wanting to have a ninja star hunting season. Than when the ninja star season opens there will be someone wanting to use a gun during that season. Twra has the season set up great. Everyone can hunt. We have a long season with plenty time to get out meat.

I'm game for a Ninja Star season. Or how about adding blow guns to archery season? No sights on the blow guns though.

Oh and what about Nunchucks? Shouldn't we be able to use them too?

All knives should be dulled with a file.

Leave all the freakin regs alone excpet open the season on mt. lions in eastern parts fo wester counties and western parts of eastern counties except for ones ending in y. And all WMA's should eb open 24/7 to the general pubic.

Why would you want that?

I'll add to Wes's post. i would guess optics help hunters make more better shots resulting in quicker more ethical kills.

you don;t want to use one, then don't.

Some states prohibit optics on muzzleloaders.

Just thought I would ask if people liked that.

I have trouble enough seeing what I'm shooting at now. Please don't take my optics away.

SAME here! Just till a couple of years ago I was open sights on the ML's I use, but got to where the ol eyesight was blurrin' and put a scope on and really sealed the deal on a good buck out to 80 or so yards give or take. I couldn't have gotten him with open sights for sure.

I cut my teeth on traditional style muzzle loaders and during ML season you'll find me with my flintlock, patched round balls and open iron sights. It's just what I like to do. I've also, at my age, been blessed with eyes that can still see those sights. Many are not as blessed or simply prefer a scope. I see no reason to ban them.

I'm the exact opposite: I have intentionally left a scope off of my MZ because I can see so well with the fiber optic sights.

Now granted, during MZ season I hunt in thick stuff where a long shot is 60 yards, so I can see the need for optics for someone taking long range shots. But I'm going to stick with what's worked for me.

Those states are slowly being shown the light (pun intended),as the hunting population ages. I believe PA is still clinging to their archaic laws but I'm not sure. They have not done anything right in 50-years, I can't see why that would change.

I'll say right plain. If TN banned optics, I would be a lawbreaker. I can't see to shoot iron sights and quite honestly, am reaching the point I don't much care what someone else seems to think is a good idea.

I do not have a scope on mine because I am to cheap and lazy to do so and I bought it when I only hunted bama and that time scopes were illegal and now they are legal. I should take the time and money to do it because I missed one last year.

I use a scope because my eyes are getting so bad I can't see the rear blade on open sights. It is just a blur.

If you have an opportunity, check out the fiber optic sights. It's amazing how lit up they are even at dusk.

New thing now called optometry...

I can't shoot with my progressive bifocals on. I've tried. I can't make them work with open sites or a scope. In fact, they mess up my sight window so bad, I can't wear them while hunting (my distance vision is still pretty good).

That must be a real pain...I wear contacts and my vision is perfect with them...have you tried contacts with the bifocal?

Tried them and could never get used to sticking something in my eyeball. Really freaked me out. I just live with slightly less than perfect distance vision while in stand, and very poor vision inside my reach. Although that makes reading in the stand tough. My arms aren't long enough to see small print clearly.

Haha...have to put your book on a stick! Really, though, the more you wear contacts the easier it all gets...I never even notice I have them in my eyes...Just takes a little perseverence in the beginning to put something in your eye...Try extended wear with the bifocals and take them out every night...I don't wear the bifocal ones but a friend does and he likes 'em...Sorry for the hijack!

I'm going to have to remember that!

I tried using them every day for a month, and honestly it got harder each day. I finally gave up all together when one morning I fought for 30 minutes to get just one contact in (unsuccessfully). I just have unusually strong defensive reflexes.
