Another chestnut question?

I planted 2 small chinese chestnuts this spring. They are about a foot tall. How many years does it take to start getting nuts?

Depends..... but I would say if they are growing like they should. About 3-4 yrs for a few burs. Fertilize them if you can.

I agree. When you plant them, it is a must to cage them. Deer will browse them to death!

Mine took about 5 years,but I really took care of them,water,fert,no grass/weed completion,and mine were about 6 foot when I got them

There is no set number. It depends on alot of variables, site, soils, nutrients, competition, genetics, etc. And then you get into what really is production. Some say a couple of nuts or fruit, some say not until a bushel, etc. etc. So Generally speaking you should start seeing some nuts around 4th to 6th leaf. But that is general based upon many factors and what you personally define as production. Companies selling trees will always tell you the best case scenarios with optimum conditions.

Thanks for the info. I have 4 apple and 2 chestnuts on 8 acres with 1 acre planted in white clover. I am hoping to plant some pears this fall.
