Difficult to compare as most NYC bbq is brisket. Texas Monthly editor Daniel Vaughn recently did a tour of NYC BBQ and came back rather impressed. Don't get me wrong, it ain't Austin, but there are several BBQ places in NYC that are doing traditionally inspired BBQ and they are doing it with high quality meat.

Me personally? I have little interest in eating BBQ in NYC because I'd rather eat food that I can't get anywhere else.

I tried 2 BBQ places in New York my self last year and I was far from impressed. I have had better BBQ in subpar places in TN, and the places I tried there were highly recommended by the locals that I talked to.

Papa KayJoe's BBQ in Centerville gets a well deserved honorable mention in my opinion. Also I'm not usually a fan of brisket but while fishing at Lake Fork in Texas we ate at a place called Circle H Barbecue and Grill, no kidding this may have been the best food I've ever eaten at a restaurant period.
