I use the very simple method of rotating the case neck above the tip of a candle while holding the case head with the thumb and forefinger. When you feel the heat and it becomes too hot to hold just put it aside and go to the next one. Also I use dark glasses to avoid the hot spot from staring at the candle flame. If you hold the case just above the flame tip, which is the hottest point anyway, you won't get soot on the neck. If you soot the neck it is no big deal to wipe it off with a damp cloth. This method is simple, inexpensive and seems to work fine especially for my low volume needs.
