I killed a deer a couple years ago with my Ruger 270,using a Hornady 270 Win 130 gr SST interlock bullet. Problem was, I shot it broadside at 15 yards thru the lungs and it didn't leave a blood trail and the bullet barely broke the skin on the opposite side's ribcage. Any idea if ammo might be the problem? Would like ammo that I can shoot 200 yards if I needed to but most shots are under 50.
 
The SST from Hornady has a very light jacket and they sometimes come apart on close range shots. I shoot Nosler Accubonds for this very reason. It expands very well on impact but holds together even through bone to give a nice sized exit hole.
 
The SST is the same basic design as the Nosler Ballistic Tip. Both are designed to do exactly what it did for you on close/high velocity shots--fragment and cause a large, wide internal wound that delivers shock to internal organs. It is really optimized for long range shots, and at those distances where the bullet has slowed, it will open and expand into a mushroom and give traditional penetration patterns. If you want to shoot a magnum/high velocity round at close range, consider a bullet designed to hold together at those speeds.

I handload SST's in a few of my rifles. My muzzleloader, the .260 and my 270 and have never had a problem like what you had. Course i've never shot one at 15 yds either, lol. I would load my other rifles with the same bullet but I can't get the accuracy out of the SST's that I like in the other calibers.
I'm guessing the deer died so either way the bullet did it's job.
 
10-4, I'll give Remington core-lokt a try. Thats what I bought for my son to use in his 30-30. What grain you suggest for my 270?
 
Either Remington Core-Lokt or Winchester Power point. they are cheap and effective. I shoot the Winchester in 150 gr. have hit deer at 25 yds and stopped them dead in their tracks. I have also hit them at 150-175 and had them go 15-30 yds with blood trail and die.
