Ammo choices

Ive always been a 20 gauge man, but they just aint many options for the turkey hunter ammo wise in 20 gauge. So im lookn to buy me a pump twelve. I like a short gun so i really like the escort pump home defense edition. Only thing is i will need to have it threaded for choke tubes but thats no big deal. I dont like the heavy recoil that a twelve throws out there so i was going to set it up to shoot 2 3/4 shells. The new winchester rooster xr will probably be the ammo, does anybody else shoot 2 3/4 shells for turkey? What do you all use?

If you're worried about recoil I'd stay with a 20-gauge but if you're dead set on a 12 get an auto and it won't kick as much. I shoot a Remington 870 with 3 1/2's so not sure what options are out there for 2 3/4. In my sons 20 he shoots 3" Winchester supreme 5's and it patterns good and kill em graveyard dead all day.

I've killed a bunch with 2 3/4" lead #5's. you're not reaching out past 35 yards much, but you can kill the poop out of one inside 35.

A 12 ga 2 3/4 load should have 1 1/2 oz of shot I would think, where most 20's have 1 oz

Thats what i use now, the federal heavyweights #7's. But thats what im trying to get away from because at $22-$25 dollars for 5 rounds is a little bit rediculous. Every time the gun goes bang that $5 dollars and i aint gettn rich anytime soon. They just aint worth it to me when all i gotta do is change guns, lol.

Shell cost is nothing compared to the costs of fuel, time, etc.

I buy my shells for $20 for 10. I kill plenty of turkeys with old school lead, no need for the high dollar loads imo

I dont spend alot of money on guns, or gas, or anything, i cant afford it. And $5 a shell is high, me and my wife live off off $1352.00 a month!!! Dont think you would pay $5 a shell either. When your not as fortunate as others you learn to survive, not live, so thank God above you can work and provide. Im not able to hunt enough to worry about it, dont know why i fool with it, i do what i can do, God bless!!!

I don't blame ya, I refuse to shoot $5 shells also! But, if ya got money, buy a really good recoil pad and step up to 3 inch. Much better choices for ammo when you step up to 3 inch and with a slightly better recoil pad you will never feel it.

Although I shoot expensive shells at turkeys, I can understand being unwilling to spend $5+ on a single shell. However, even if you buy an economical shotgun, you are going to have to shoot a whole lot of turkeys with $.50 shells to pay for your new gun.

I think you missed my point. What I'm saying is you're looking for a 12-gauge shotgun and lets just say you find one for $250 and you buy it. For that same amount of money you could have bought 50 $5 shells. If you shoot 3 turkeys a year that's over 16 years of shells. Now that said, I don't blame you one bit for not wanting to spend $5/shell. I stopped shooting them when the Longbeards came out last year because they patterned so well in my gun. At the end of the day do what want and as you said stay within your means. After all how hard is it really to kill a turkey? :)

just use Federal Flight Control Wad #5s Lead in 20 gauge and keep them at 30 or under. Problem solved and those shells are cheap.

Those shells are lethal out of a full choke far beyond 30.

My point is there are much much cheaper ways to kill a turkey then buying s new gun and having it gunsmithed to work for you. I mean if you don't want to spend $5 a shell, which is still odd to me you would rather buy a new gun, shells and pay a gunsmith to fix it and buy a choke rather then buy a $5 shell, then buy cheaper shells and don't try and shoot 60yds.

Having said that you can find those heavyweights on sale all the time for $15-17 a box. You will spend that on cokes and dip during turkey season so I don't see what the issue is. If your on a low income and that $20 is gonna break the banck then shoot the lead version and don't shoot as far.

I do have a 20 gauge single shot that i was goin to have threaded for choke tubes, but the reason i mentioned the 12 gauge is there are alot more options when it comes to turkey guns and ammo for the 12 gauge. Yes the $5 a shell are alot better than the lead loads, but like i said, i cant afford them. My 20 gauge is a modified choke and will not shoot lead shells worth a crap, so im still looking at around $120 for threading for chokes and drill and tap for a scope

They make them, but they are called winchester rooster xr. They are made for pheasants but the shot-lok technology is the same as the longbeards.

Those federal premiums will pattern suprisingly tight out of factory chokes/standard constrictions. I usually shoot a factory full with them and have killed past 40 (accidently) with my 20 gauge.

I would try a box before I spent the money on setting up a gun from scratch. You might be suprised.

Oh yes there is! Federal makes a hevishot deal that is #7 shot. at 1 1/2 oz in 20 ga 3 in. it's like shooting 2'oz lead #5's pellet count and energy wise. They aint cheap but they are top dog and it ain't like dove shooting. Go to federal's website and chek'em out.

In Canada our shot that is allowed is 4,5,6 size. My 870 patterned well with the Winchester elite #5 3in shells. But expensive for 10 shells I paid like $30cnd

I dont care what gun you shoot. Dont go to the field with ammo other than Winchester Longbeard. I think with all the test we did on here last year there is no doubt its the best.

Use Hevishot Mag blend in the 2 3/4. I think they even have a reduced recoil load

i refuse to pay $5 or more for one shell, i shoot the longbeards that i got for $13 for a box of 10 with a rebate,think i bought 5 boxes. anyway i have never felt recoil while shooting at a turkey noway, but checking pattern that is a different story. maybe just get you a good recoil pad
