Alta-Swede Mammoth Red Clover

I saw on qdma where this clover can be used for green manure. I was planning on planting buckwheat this spring but would it be easier to frost seed the red clover and disc it under next fall? Would it serve the same purpose as buckwheat?

Is it a newly established plot? What is your ph at in it?

If its a new plot and you are just now applying lime and fertilizer ,. i would go with the buckwheat when the threat of frost has gone(MAY). It will take a few months for the lime and fertilizer to begin to work the soil, so use that time to build the soil with buckwheat. THEN,. in fall(SEPT) ,.. plant the red clover. I really like red clover and highly recommend it. Here is one of my favorite mixes....
10 lbs red clover
10 lbs arrowleaf clover
1 lb chicory
50 lb wheat or oats

woodsandwater,. i will also add that i would not use mammoth red clover in that mix. mammoth is for organic use only,. it has little forage use.

Buckwheat at least has forage use and helps build soil, so you get the best of both worlds with buckwheat. Buckwheat is much more cost effective also,.. buckwheat is around $28 per 50 lbs and mammoth is over $100 per 50!! For cost alone i would use buckwheat myself!!
