I found the deal of the century on armslist.com it was a 5.5-25x56 Nightforce for $820 (retail $2200). I contacted the guy via email. I ask several questions about why he was selling and when he got it. He claimed his name was tye beeck in rogers Arkansas. I searched Google and this name came up in rogers Arkansas in his father's obituaries. I contacted Nightforce with the serial number to make sure it wasn't counterfeit and it checked out good they said it was sold last year. Everything was checking out good. I got an envelope and was headed to the bank with his check and my gut told me no. I emailed the guy again and told him that I wanted to have a voice conversation about the scope. I received a text message from a number registered to lake Odessa Michigan. When I would call the number it would go to voice mail. I told him to call me and a number from ohio showed up on my caller ID. I then knew it was a fraud so I ask him what part of ohio rogers was located. He paused for a few seconds and said I am in are-Kansas (he said it like you spell it) I said "ohhhhh Ok well stupid I am from east tennessee and I have enough f@&*ING sense to know it's Arkansas. Needless to say he hung up on me.

I contacted rogers Arkansas police department and talked with an officer. He said the address didn't make sense. I ask him if he would do a drive by and to see if he could make contact with this "tye beeck" (if there is such a person) and let him know his name is being used to scam people.

I am happy and sad all at the same time.

If it sounds to good to be true.

Sure glad you went the extra mile to check him out. Seems like these people get away with anything.

I did. After telling the guys at work about it we searches him again and it appears that this isn't the his first post on armslist that has been banned and he is on other sites selling guns also

As far as I'm concerned, everything on armslist is a scam.
I've worked too many cases involving Nigerian scams running through there.
A quick way to sort wheat from chaff (but by no means the only one!) is to google search the photos in the ad. 9 times out of 10, it comes back to a known website. In other words, some elses photo they stole from the internet.

Yep, got to watch out on armslist. I found a rem 700P with 40x trigger new in the box on there for $500 and thought I was about to get a smoking deal. Everything on the emails sounded legit. Listing said Bloomington, Mn. When I got a phone number to contact the guy the number was for somewhere in Indiana. When I got him on the phone he had a serious middle eastern accent and the call seemed like it was on some kind of time delay. Definite no go! I contacted armslist and they sent a message back that said I wasn't the first alert on it. I don't understand why they let people list on there that are unregistered. That being said, I did get a great deal on a different rifle on there. Dude lived in Clarksville and drove over and met me at Bass Pro in Nashville. I will not do a out of state shipping deal on there, definitely got to be careful!

Glad you looked and thought it over before sending over the $$$. There's only 2 sites i really trush people on and that's tndeer and a local site called vci.net.

Sometimes the name and phone number are legit!

This is how the scam works:
Lonely guy meets "model" in chat room. She needs money for X (stuck overseas, needs cash for photos, etc.)
She has a friend who has guns to sell. If lonely guy helps out and sells them on line, he can keep a percentage and she gets money for her needs..
Nigerian just cut and paste someone elses sale ad into a new armslist listing, putting lonely guy's info as the POC. Dumb buyer is actually talking to an american. They even fake up FFLs and may spoof phone and fax numbers for a legitimate gun store.
If lonely guy does one successful sale, Nigerian buys him anew laptop.
Nigerian can even provie references and family photos in case you are hesitant.
This has been VERY successful.

Everything you did sounds like the correct process. Just remember that it today's world of cell phones, the listing city isn't necessarily where the person lives now. My daughter got her cell phone years ago when she lived in Denver, and though she's been back in Tennessee for years, her phone still shows up as Denver on caller ID.

The fact that he couldn't answer my questions quickly and he couldn't pronounce Arkansas was a pretty good indicator that he was a fake.
I have since had another run in with some more Frauds. I'm getting a little enjoyment out of messing with them. Hehehe

Yup, you did good. I'm just saying that if everything else checked out, don't let the area code or city of the phone number drive you away.

I once had a guy try to sell me something. He could barely speak English, but he said his name was "Mike Anderson". Yeah, right.
