Almost destroyed a nest

While I don't mow fields until late summer, I try to keep grass short around my rows of Chestnut and fruit trees. While mowing strips yesterday, a quail flew up just in front of my mower. I immediately stopped and saw tall grass woven into a nest containing 5 eggs. So thankful that I didn't destroy the nest and eggs.

I've never ran across a Quail nest before.
That's pretty cool.

Quail are super sensitive to nest disturbance. Hopefully she comes back and pulls it off.

The first one I found, I was a straddle of it when the hen came off, slapping my legs with her wings. I checked in on it from a distance 5 days later and there was a swarm of 16 fuzzy "bumblebees" hatching out of the nest.

me either. i've found several woodcock nests, never quail. afraid there are far more woodcock around here than quail though. math works out.

I will check the next from a distance this weekend.... dang bird has a 11 acres of overgrown grass field to choose... just had to nest beside a white tree tube!

I don't think it's a thing for quail, but grouse and turkeys almost always nest against a log, stump, or tree. Their nests aren't usually as elaborate as a quail nest though.

I've found dozens of nests when I was a kid. Now I'm lucky to jsut hear 1 or 2 in the spring.

Guy bush hogging for my mom ran over a duck nest. Nowhere near water. The creek is 500 yards away. Plus it's June.

Not looking good for this nest. I've checked it twice and no hen sitting on the eggs. (15 total eggs)
