I have access to a #50 of alfalfa seed cheap($50) from a friend of a friend, ive heard people say it requires alot of maintenance. does that mean spraying or cutting or something else?

My uncle grew alfalfa in Maury County years ago (60's and early
70's). I used to spend two weeks on the farm, during summer
break, to help my Grand Father. One field was about 20 acres and
several others were about 10 to 15 acres. Back then, there were
no deer in that area of Maury County.
The alfalfa grew in profusion back then, with little cost and
"babying". I really don't know what's different now, than it was
years ago, but Alfalfa seems to be taboo....nowdays.
There were no deer coming to the lush alfalfa fields back then,
but I had alot of fun ground hog hunting and practicing to go
hunt in Lewis and Hickman County........for DEER.

For the past 3 years, we've grown about 5 acres for the deer. They love it and it's not been hard to maintain or grow. I highly recomend it!

Around 25% protein with high digestibility make it a perferred legume for deer. It can be difficult to maintian and you need a neutral pH as it has a low tolerance for moisture and acidity. It is also prone to insect disease and is not tolerant of weed competition. Thing is there are over 200 varities of alfafa so you need to do your homework to see what youve got. The important thing to know is if you have a "Winter hardy" or "Fall Dormant" varitey. THe co-op can tell you what is best for ya.
