Why because AL has some weird season structure??? We don't need to do what other states do!

By your thinking maybe we should petition for a dog season with buckshot.... Just like AL and my old home state of VA.....

While I can understand shooting small game with an air rifle, I just don't get the attraction to using one for big game. As for spears, sounds like they want even more treestand accidents. That's crazy.

Not saying that Tennessee could sustain a dog season but it is fun! Hunted with dogs in Eastern North Carolina on large tracts and we had a blast. IT was great to see the dogs work!

If you really like another state's regulations so much, why not pay the cash for your nonresident licenses and go hunt there. That is much easier than trying to convince everyone that our own state should change their rules to suit your needs. There's a huge diversity of hunting opportunities and different rules and seasons across the country, and nobody is stopping you from crossing borders if you really like another state better.

I think AL's regs are pretty interesting. maybe one day I'll have to suck it up and buy the nonres license and give it a shot...

I was fortunate enough to get invited to join a small "family" lease in Clarke Co. Gonna hunt down there Feb 1-10. Rut should be in full swing. Ten day out of state license costs as much as the lease....:)

Worth it though to be able to take a break and extend the season....

I recall a few years back an article ran in the local newspaper for Redstone Arsenal (Huntsville, AL) about a man who had built his own 45 caliber air rifle and had been involved with getting them legalized for deer in Alabama. It seemed like the rifle had ballistics similar to a 45 ACP or thereabout. Would certainly be capable of killing a deer.

Still, I wouldn't be interested in such a weapon. Too expensive for such limited effectiveness for me.

That is exactly what I do!
I deer hunt in Kentucky every year and do like their regulations.

I live in Alabama and can tell you that the 'one size fits all' seasons down here aren't all that they may appear to the outsider.......at least where I live in Marshall County. We have pockets or real good deer and those pockets produce almost every year if not every year. We also have large areas where the 2 does a day for the duration of season damn near wiped the population out. That liberal limit, in addition to a buck a day for the duration, was in place for several years without regard as to how some areas couldn't sustain that much killing. A year or so ago, the state biologist admitted that Marshall County deer numbers had been set back to numbers not seen since the 80s. So the doe limit is now 1 a day for the whole season and it should be reduced to just a few doe days per season IMHO.

In all seriousness Alabama does have its own unusual,set of circumstances that requires a different schedule.

The Southern part of the state has a much later rut than the Northern part of the state.

I haven't hunted Alabama in years . I will be hunting hogs there in the coming weeks . I absolutely hated deer hunting down there when they were running dogs. I never want to deer hunt in a state where they run dogs again. I would be sitting there nice and quite and hear the leaves start to rustle and some dog would come and sit down beside me and never leave. Or they would come tearing through there and you knew your day was shot. The only verbal confrontation I ever had with a fellow hunter that turned nasty was over a dog. I thought it was going to come to blows and gunshots.

What are the TN regulations?
If it is a caliber requirement, I would think that a .357 caliber air rifle would be legal?
Just curious, I am actually intriqued by the idea. Looks pretty cool online, plus they are effective out to 50+ yards.

Just watch American Airgunner. A 357 and larger air rifle can,easily kill a deer. Sam Yang, Crosman,and others make air rifles that cam kill a deer.

Air rifles for large game are out, small game yes.

Air bows are out. I feel,sure as other states adopt Airbow regulations that TN will will follow in years to come. I mean NY of all,places has pending approval of them. And they have more gun regulations and hunting regulations that you can shake a stick at.

I think TN would be worried about passing air gun approval,for hunting deer with a caliber restriction. Because you know many hunters all they would hear is the word air gun and opening day they would be up in a tree with a Pellet rifle. I suspect that is one reason it took TN so long to get .22 center fire approved. Someone hears the word 22's got legalized for hunting and the next thing you know someone is hunting with a rim fire.

Air guns .25 cal. and SMALLER are legal for hunting small game.

Calibers larger than .25 are illegal for hunting in TN.

Heading down there later this week to see what I can do. Can you buy your spear the night before going hunting just like a gun having it bore sighted and be ready to go? Not sure I can yell roll tide but can yell War Eagle!
