Age guess - Tooth wear

I'm terrible at tooth aging. I've never been able to pinpoint an age like some folks do. But ill try and see how my guess compares to others'. They look worn but not completely worn out so maybe 3.5-4.5???
there doesn't seem to be a lot of wear on the first 2 permanent molars, but the deep cut away from the tongue side on the last cusp of the 3rd molar usually means 4 years old. Flat would be 3 years old, concave would be 2.

I would guess 4.5 based on the wear.

CA analysis is interesting, got a buddy that has sent off several sets and most align closely with our guesstimations.
But my understanding, in the Southeast, with our mild winters, even CA analysis can be off a year. But I have the teeth so I may send them off. Would be interesting to compare.

Self taught, its not in the textbooks, but i learned to look at the premolars several years ago to help decide between years when looking at molars is a split between ages.
Its more an art form after studying 100s of them, but that's exactly why I lean to 4.5 on your deer... 2nd premolar had wear classic for 4.5/5.5 deer, but there is actually less wear on the 3rd premolar than you would expect, even for a 4.5yo.
Its good to get familiar with wear patterns of the premolars, and not just the 3 molars by themselves.
All true. If you really want to have fun, send each middle incisor to both CA labs and see if they align.
Back in my Ames days when we aged 150-200 deer a year by TR&W and I was cracked out on getting the age correct (as best we could), I sent some of our good buck's teeth off for CA analysis/aging. Matson and DeerAge always asked me what I thought the age was based on TR&W method. For the bucks I had at 4.5, they also came back at 4.5 for the most part. For a few of the bucks that I had at 5.5 (small sample size), they came back at 6.5 for at least one of them.
Matson's also gives a confidence rating as well....most of the teeth I have sent in had clearly defined rings and a high confidence rating. For the ones that weren't clearly defined, they gave a confidence rating of B and gave the range of possible age based on the ambiguity.
One buck years ago I had posted photos of from trailcams on here and most people guessed 5.5 years old. After I shot him, the jawbone looked like a young 2 years old. Matson's aged him at 3 with a confidence rating of B and age range 2-3. I have never seen another 2 year old buck even close to what that buck was, and he was filled out and had the posture of a mature buck. I believe he was an early born 2 year old that just had a muscular build and good anther genes....and too bad he didn't get a couple of more years to express his potential.
