I knew as soon as I saw him he was at least 3.5, after we got hands on him, I thought it quite possiable he was older than that. In the excitement of Luke's kill, I never looked at the teeth, I tried later but he already had lockjaw. When I got him to the taxidermist, I asked him to save the jawbone for me, and he says, "that deer's a good 4.5". Well he pulled it and says, "no, looks like a 3.5 by the teeth, I would have sworn he was older than that." I agree though, the teeth look like 3.5.
I've got this to say, all I've ever killed before is the good 2.5's...........if only 1 more year can make this big a difference, I need to quit shooting those 2.5's. This is by far the nicest deer we've gotten off the farm, and I've been hunting there 9 years.....9 years and never killed anything but 2.5's. I'm just amazed at the body development and the antler mass that 1 year adds to a deer, I think I'm a believer now, I need to kill 3.5 yo deer! Best deer off the farm and it goes to my 9 year old, couldn't get any better. Thanks everybody.
