After select cutting and there are still piles of brush and logs after I've gotten the good firewood out do you think its worth the time and effort to pile it up and burn so more forest floor are exposed?

Exactly. The brush piles will prevent some species of browse from being eaten down to the dirt.

I want my cut areas to be "knarly" when the logger is through, with tops laying everywhere.
