I recently purchased a T/C Scout .54 caliber. I tried sighting it in this week and it was all over the paper at 25 yards. I was shooting into 1/2 inch plywood and noticed the bullet was hitting sideways like it was tumbling. I was shooting Hornady .54 caliber sabots and 100 gr. Pyrodex. The gun is used....could the barrel be so dirty that the rifling isn't grabbing the sabot? (just a guess) Please share your opinion and advice. Thanks!
 
What weight bullet were your shooting?

IIRC the Scout was offered in a 1-20 and a 1-38 twist. Im not sure if that applies to the 54cal as well. If you have a 1-38 you may want to try a bullet in the 240gr range. My old ThunderHawk 1-38 would shoot a 240gr without any major problems. 300gr 44cal and 45cal bullet would tumble. They are a bit too long for that twist unless you can increase the velocity quite a bit.

Personally, i prefer a 54x50 sabot load for 54cals. A 300gr 50cal bullet shot pretty good in mine also.
 
Thanks for the response. I am shooting 285 grain 44 caliber Hornady's sabots. Here's a follow up question...can you shoot 50 caliber pyrodex pellets in a 54 caliber? Thanks
 
That bullet might be kinda long for the twist. Ive never used 50cal pellets in a 54cal. They do make a 54cal pellet but ive never used them either. 2 of them is a 120gr equivalent. Ive always used loose powder in my 54s.

Do you have any 240gr 44cal bullet you can try in those sabots?
 
No I don't have 54 caliber in 240 grain. I think I am going to purchase 54x50 like you said. Thank you for the input. I really appreciate it.
