Advice on Youth Rifle

Looking to find a youth rifle for my son. I was looking at the Savage Axis Youth .223 and was wondering if anyone has this gun or knows someone that does and if they like it. My son will be 8 in march. Handles a .22 and a 20 guage really well. Had him shoot a shortend stock .243 but that seemed to be a little much. Any help would be greatly appreciated
 
I have a Remington Model 7 CDL in a .260 and absolutely love it. Once my daughter and son are old enough(one is 3 the other is due any day) I plan on handing that gun down to them. The gun is a little pricey, but shoots and feels great. The model 7 comes in many calibers child friendly too! Just my .02
 
Good advice, the Model 7 is a great lil gun. If looking for a deer round I personally wouldn't go below the .243 which imo is the best round out there for a kid or small frame hunter who doesn't like recoil. Its one of the most accurate calibers and with the quality 100 grn bullets readily available, its a very good performing round on deer.

Got the Axis in .243 for my daughter. It is not the recoil that is giving me problems, it is the stock length. She is short armed and I am going to have to do stock work before she can shoot. Youth stock is only 1-2" shorter than standard stock. Youth stock fits me pretty good.
 
Remington Model 7 7mm-08 x6. Good for little kids and adults. I don't know why I upgraded a few years ago, thinking about using my 7mm-08 some more this year.
 
My son same age. Got him the H&R youth .243 He already killed 2 with it. Great little gun and very accurate

As a kid, I didn't know they made 'youth' rifles. I grew up with a borrowed 35, my dad's 30-06, or my dad's 243. When I was in high school, ironically enough, I got the 7-08 in youth....(maybe my dad just got a great deal?) Anyhow, still my favorite gun. Both of these fellers liked it less than I do!

 
I have an Axis in 308. Solid gun. I have heard great things about it in all calibers. Great hunting gun for the price. Saw where base Savage hunting rifles beat base Remington hunting rifles in a comparison of the two.
 
I have a Remington Model 7 .243 in a youth model my son and daughters shot at 6. Low recoil and a good shooting rifle. Plus it fits a small kids size perfect.
 
Bought my daughter a browning a-bolt micro midas in .243. She killed one last year at 7 years old and one this year at 8. Neither deer walked another step. It kicks a little bit, but not bad enough for her not to want to shoot it. It also comes in 7mm-08 or .308. My nephew killed several deer with the .308 at the same age. He used the Remington managed recoil bullets.
 
Bought my 7 yr old a Remington Model 7 in 7mm-08 and put a Limbsaver recoil pad and bought some Manage Recoil 140 gr cartridges, can't wait til Christmas morning
 
I grew up hunting with a Browning A-bolt in 7mm-08 and absolutely loved it, killed a TON of deer too. And I actually got a good deal on a Remington 700 in 7mm-08 this year and will probably be hunting with it
 
I've got a H&R Youth 243 for my youngest
daughter who just graduated college in May,
she killed her first when she was 9 with it.

Don't know how many kids have killed deer with
That gun, loss count.

That said I would think about an encore for a boy
so he could work into MZ hunting, even Turkey
with shotgun barrel

I put a Leupold FX 4x33mm on my Model 7. Works perfect. Fixed power scopes for kids in my opinion are perfect.
