Advice on Fishing Trip

A friend asked...

I wanted to see if you had any ideas for a 2014 summer father/son fishing location. Last summer we went to the Boundary Waters / Quetico and this summer (early June) went to the White River / Gastons.

Some of us fly fish while a few are still spin fishing so a fly only locale doesn't work. Any ideas that are within driving distance (within 6-7 hours drive time) that we should look into? My guess is late May /early June time frame is when we will be looking to go.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Tellico river or citco creek in Monroe county. I was there last weekend and had a blast!

Yes, not for me. They live in Nashville.

Hiwassee is a great river and beautiful...Also not far from Nantahala and Tellico...

Smallmouth float on the New River in NC, VA or WV. There's plenty of places to rent/shuttle canoes or rafts. Can't give better info without more details. How many days? $$$? Roughing it or lodge/hotel base?

South Holston river in Kingsport TN for trout. That can satisfy the spin and fly fishermen and there are some good browns to be had.

Yes, not for me. They live in Nashville.

well, if they like to go after rockfish....holler at me next year , as i dont fish for trout anymore except in winter. but i dont know about catching them on a fly, as the water is murky in spring time. unless you add some kind of rattle contraption to the fly :D

I'm pretty sure they don't care since he said he went to the Boundary Waters one year. That's smallie, pike, walleye, maybe lake trout water. So I assume it could be saltwater, largemouth,trout, whatever. As long as it's a good fly fishing destination with the option for conventional fishers to join in. Thanks.

That was actually my first thought. He said something about it being 6-7 hours drive time, so i wasn't sure if he could make it to a saltwater destination. We'll see. Thanks.

FYI - Nashville to Venice is right at 9 hours. But it's worth it.
