Hello everyone. I am not a new member, but can't get logged into my old account, DeerSlayer. I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on a bow purchase. I can't afford these 1000 dollar outfits so I am looking at used bows. I have found a Bowtech Fuel on Craigslist and several Mathews Switchback. The Price is about the same, but the bowtech is adjustable. Just wondered what your thoughts were. Or recommend some other setup around the 450 dollar range. Thank you

I also saw that on HuntersFriend I can get a NEW Pse Stingray for about the same price as these used bows, for what that is worth

Don't know what area of the state you are in, but if you're in West TN and close to it, Custom Gear and Archery in Michie, TN has a good selection of used bows and they are a top notch shop with a knowledgeable staff. If you are anywhere close it's worth giving them a look. They have a lot of different brands, and they have a range indoors so you can test out what you like before you pick one to make sure it will work for you.

Unfortunately I am nowhere close. Roane county, closer to Anderson county. Thank you very much though

Sportsman's Choice in Halls (Knox) county has new and used Mathews, Hoyt, and PSE bows. They know how to set a bow up and will help you out.

Bows are expensive, but the stuff you put on them and shoot through them can be expensive as well. Try to buy a "package deal".

I gotta tell you there are a whole lot of really good bows out there you can get new that won't break the bank allready set up that will do the job really nice.

Buying used can be problematic when it comes to bows. You just don't know if the bow has been dry fired or dropped. You could be buying someone elses problems.
If all I had was $400 I would be looking real hard at this bow

But don't get locked into just one bow. Shoot a great variety of bows and see which one shoots the best for you.

That is good advice. I responded Eric. :)

Maybe all of you could explain why some bows are called "starter" bows.

"Starter bows" tend to not have the newest tech in them, slightly less expensive materials used, maybe a little more noise and vibration. Many times, these are bows that were flagships from a few years ago that have been rebranded.

Is this your first bow purchase? If so, I'd go to a shop or three, tell them a budget, and have them help you.

As someone said earlier, there are a lot of good bows that can be had for $600 or under. The Hoyt Charger was actually in my top two when I went to purchase a new bow a couple years ago. The Mission Ballistic was 3rd. Go and shoot some and talk to a shop and buy one from them and I doubt you'll be disappointed.

Not my first bow, I am sorry I didn't mention that. I had a Pearson a long long time ago, and then owned a High Country PowerForce. I purchased these used from people and just don't know much about any of these newer bows. A friend at work wants to sell me his Mathews Switchback with arrows, three releases, a hard case, and sling, and a little more for 500, but it is the wrong draw length and I know it would require an extra cam and work to change it.

I would buy a new mission or other bow before I would buy the switchback. Although it's a classic, it's pretty old now. You could get a new setup with newer technology for $500 and would have a warranty. With the bows Mission and some other companies have now, I see no reason for a person to buy used just going by being on a budget alone.

You would have to go to a Mathews/Mission dealer. I suggest you look at all the models, as well as other brands, and pick the on you like best.

I just saw that Sportsmans Choice has them and that is about an hour away. Maybe I can get over there

Tell him that Mike sent you or give me a shout and we can schedule a day for me to meet you there and I'll set a few up and let you shoot a few and see what feels the best . I shoot out of that shop and wouldn't care a bit to help steer ya in the right direction .

Thank you, that's very nice man!

Hey DMAG. It is probably out of my price range. I live in Roane County. Curious what all you are including and the price. Thanks!

Updated - Advice for a compound purchase

Hey everybody! I just went to Sportsmans Choice today in Halls. I gotta tell ya, that BowHunter163 was very nice and pointed me in the right direction. I didn't buy anything, but sure did find one I like. I shot a Mission Hype DT and let me tell you, that thing is sweet. I know it isn't a $$$$ bow (which I can't afford) but it sure felt like a million dollar bow compared to what I owned previously. They left me shoot it about a half dozen times (actually I don't think he cared how many times I shot it.) It is very quiet and felt great to me. They have a package deal for $549, but I would still need arrows/b-heads, a release, and a case.

I have a friend wanting me to buy his Mathews Switchback for $500, but that thing has arrows, a nice case, broadheads, 3 releases, a cover for the site, a cover for the bow cams that is also a sling, and maybe 2 extra quiver holders. It is a really nice complete deal. I know it has been well taken care of. It just needs a new cam to fit my monkey arms.

Just curious about your thoughts on the matter. If it were you.... Thanks again so much!!!

Paul

As stated before, I would go new. If you do buy the switchback, you will probably be able to find a used cam to fit you. Just keep in mind if you can't, the one I had to order from Mathews a few year ago was like eighty something dollars. However, it was a left hand so it was a lot harde to find a used one. To tell you the truth, and this is not knowing exactly what and how many accessories come with the Switchback, I think your friend may be asking to much. I wouldn't give more than $250 for the bare bow. To me, I not seeing what else he's including as another $250. Again though, I don't know exactly what the accessories are.

With it being your first bow in years, I'd go new. There is something about having a good warranty in case you make a mistake or, more likely, some unforeseen thing happens while you are out. I doubt someone that you consider a friend is going to screw you but little issues can be overlooked and become big issues in a hurry. That Switchback is more than a couple years old too adding to the potential that some random thing has happened. Buy that Hype DT from the shop and you know that you are covered and have some professional advice not too far away. You will probably need to budget at last $60 for 1/2 dozen arrows, $40 for broadheads, and another $65 for a release. You should be able to get decent broadheads and a release for cheaper but having it built in would be nice. I'd skip a case as it is not an essential for getting setup right away. Buying arrows you should be able to talk them into giving you some target points. Obviously that is more money than you are intending to spend but, again, if something happens, you are covered. If your Switchback blows up you don't get your money back, you might hurt your friendship, and you'll have to spend that extra money getting it fixed.

True fire release is close to $20 at Walmart, Slick trick broad heads are about $20 for a 3 pack, arrows for a 6 pack are 40-80 depending on what kind you get. 549 is not a bad price on the mission, but there are other RTS packages from Bear and PSE and I'm sure some others that can be had for 399 that are very good bows if they will get up to your draw length. There are other options out there unless you already have your mind set on either the Mission or the Matthews. Not trying to steer you in any particular direction, just showing you a few other options.

thank you all again for all the great advice. I am out of town but will be home tomorrow and plan on buying the bow Wednesday I am pretty sure! :super:

I have a 60lbs. right had Hoyt Katera that I am planning on selling. If it's something your interested in, pm me. I plan to sell it fully loaded, at least 1/2 dozen arrows $340. I'm 20 minutes north of Knoxville.
