Was in the words this morning and happened to come across some green acorns on the ground. They were fat round ones. What kind are they? Another question I have is I have found two fresh rubs. . .does this mean they are already starting to shed velvet?

Stresssed oaks canand will drop excess acorns early.

Sounds like at least one of your local bucks has lost his velvet! Normal velvet shedding is around the 1st and 2nd week of September.

Squirrels will start kocking them out too. Impossible to know what type they are without pics of the acorns (bark and leaves would be helpful).
 
For those seeing acorns falling pretty consistantly, that's probably trees getting rid of more fruit than they can mature.

I've seen pictures of bucks in hard antler any time from mid-August on. That's not "normal," but Nature eventually gets around to trying everything.

These chestnut oaks look over mature! They are the size of a ping pong ball! No joke!! A deer could get full on about 10 of these things. Lol
 
Mountain Chestnut Oaks produce one of the largest acorns available. Too bad deer don't prefer them. They will eat them when no other acorn is available, but once something better starts to fall...

Just don't confuse the Mountain Chestnut Oak with the Swamp Chestnut Oak. The Swamp Chestnut Oak is THE highest preferred acorn going.
 
Our deer here will hammer the Chestnut oaks until the more preferred acorns fall which is normally 2 to 4 weeks later. Our Chestnut oaks have the large elongated acorns, normally yellow/brown when falling.
 
I thought it was strange too. But the guy said it's because it's been so dry his year. They are just excess acorns from the tree. Its not the actual drop yet. He said the tree will drop off what it needs to in order for the rest of the acorns to survive.

Exactly. Trees are dumping the excess that they can no longer support to maturity.

Yup. Usually we have Chestnut Oak acorns on the ground for two weeks before the other species start to fall. For that two weeks, deer eat them.
 
Yep, these 3 trees have had acorns every year for over 20 years. I have killed a "couple" deer under them.

Makes sense, the whiteoaks dropping acorns on my place are absolutely loaded.
 
But the only catch is that it's the Norris watershed hunt! I get the first week of bow only! They should really have more than a one week gun and one week bow season there.
