Acorn question.

Usually around here around 2nd week in oct the deer around switch from feeding in field to eating acorns. This year it hasn't happenned yet. I was just wondering why? Does killing frost have anything to do with it? What makes the factor for them to change? That would b some good info to know????

In my part of Stwart county there is very few white oak acorns, some farms with none, most field edge trees, and what red oaks I'm seeing are very small and the deer are not hitting them yet.

This is the earliest year ever that I've seen quality white oak acorns on the ground (before the corn was cut), and the deer have been hitting them good all during bow season, and still are.

You think any of your neighbors are feeding corn or any other supplemental feed to change up their routine? Just a guess on my part.....

There's very few acorns in Humphreys Co. this year.

A few Chestnut Oaks had acorns , what few white oak acorns I've seen were rotten.

I bet my neighbors would say there are no cornfields within 5 miles of their place also but they are wrong. We have corn planted on our property in small plots.

I've noticed for sure this year that the deer shifted once the acorns started falling. the deer I shot last night was hitting red oaks.

Pounding the acorns here in Lawrence and Wayne counties since mid September.............................a full two weeks earlier than any previous years in the last 20. We are now having some show up in the green fields but when cutting their stomachs open on harvested ones the color is predominantly brown...................the real test of how much and exactly what they are consuming as a large %. I follow the "%".....................hunt the mast or transitions. As of now in these two counties go with scrapes if you can find hot ones with the broken branch, and especially if you find the "large hub" scrapes indicating a traffic area of use for bucks. The next 3 weeks should be hot in these two counties for scrape hunting for a buck.

Deer have been hitting acorns hard for a few weeks here in Mid TN. Especially noticeable in the past 2 weeks. Corn fields were cut early and a lot of rain caused all the corn to sprout... most bean fields have been brown for a while, some are cut, and even the late planted fields haven't had the same action since the acorns and persimmons started coming down. It's not a bumper crop, but it's a great year for red oaks, and a good year for white and chinkapin oaks, although they are more hit or miss depending on what piece of woods you're in.
