Stopped in a new local gun/ police shop today to look around. Looking at pistols but also see used selection. Migrated over to the a/r section and started looking around. I know NOTHING about this type rifle. They had DPMS and Bushmaster in $800 - $900 range bare bones rifle with (sliding?) Stock.
Does this sound about right or high? low? on price.
Also is the main difference in ar 15 (223) and ar10 (308) just overall rifle size and kick. Any info appreciated and I am cruising over to ar15.com to read up.

Last thing what is everyone's preference on manufacturer and are they all basically the same.
 
Make sure that what you buy is mil. spec. that will give you a lot more options than one that is not made to mil. spec.

A .308 would be nice but it cost a lot more to shoot than a .223. I have found ammo. for a .223 as low as $129.00 for 500 rounds.
 
AR10s are considerably heavier than AR15s. Add a scope and full 20 round mag to the AR10 and you're in the 10 to 13 pound range. I have one that's been a safe queen for about 10 years now.
 
Price...I think is a little on the high side. I'm on my second AR. You can get many different configurations with the option to add many aftermarket toys. The ORC with a 16" barrel works well for me. Plan on spending a few hundred bucks for upgrades. Seems most shooters end up buying triggers, slings, and optics.
 
I have a High Standard that has been abused and it still shoots moa or less and has had one fail to feed on some wore out brass,,

if I was buying now I would get the S&W mp15 or DPMS for the best price I could find,,

I appreciate that advice but I don't think I have the time to do the research I need to do to figure out how and then the time to build. I need another project like I need a 300 lb woman in a string bikini with a bucket of KFC.
 
What are you going to use it for and what caliber you wanting?

There are a few for sale over on Predator Masters Forums....

The prices you listed are about right... between the two that you could walk out the store with, go with the DPMS.

No doubt they need love and I'm all for it but I just don't need one.

I'll check out predator masters, my biggest concern with that is since I don'r know much about them, getting one that's all jacked up and worn down.

I just have never had one and thought it would be cool to play around with. 308 seems awesome but recoil,cost to shoot, size leads me to the 223.

I thought the prices seemed reasonable it is a newer shop in my hometown and they are two gerations of gunsmith. Like to help the locals start on the right foot and stay in business.

I would go that route then and help out the local store.... then if you had issues with it, they could help since you bought it there.

What I was thinking as well. With the price of gas if I find a used one online, by the time I travel to meet, gas and time wise I can buy it for same price.

I know several guys who learned to build them off of the internet and they have built some sweet guns, and they seem to like theirs alot better and take pride in building their own. But if building one is not what you want to do, they usually run in the 699 - 1100$ range depending on what you buy. The a/r's are very fun to shoot, and there is ton's of things you can do to them. Good luck on getting one there fun !
 
I have a Bushmaster M4 barrel with Mini Y Comp with complete bolt carrier group that I'll part with if somebody wants it. About 250 rounds thru it and never any rapid fire. Like new inside and out.
 
I would shop around some before you buy. I sold a new unfired DPMS this week for $675. It had a 16" barrel and collapsible stock, sling and 3 30 rd. mags. I got it in a trade and just didn't need it.

As far as brand, I have Bushmaster and Double Star and don't have any complaints about either one.

Think I decided on a DPMS A3 Lite 16. Seems like a fair price,the gun I need, and I like the guy and shop I'm buying from.
