Caught quite a few fish today, but only brought 2 flounder and 1 speck home to eat. I was hoping for some Spanish early, but they have moved off. All the specks I caught were short except for just 1. And all the reds were too big to eat, so they all got released. One flounder was 19.5in, one of my top 3.

I did have a big Jack Crevalle eat my jerkbait right at the boat. I didnt want to lose the bait, so I chased him around after he nearly spooled me. Finally after about 5 minutes, he straightened out the hooks and pulled loose. Those fish are absolute tanks.

Sounds like an excellent day. Congrats.
I Hooked a monster jack in 200ft of water, I was using a talica 50 and it plum wore me out. They are crazy fighting fish.
 
A few years back I went with a guide out of Pensacola who live chummed jack Crevalle and amberjack up. Decided to fly fish and got my a$$ kicked all day long. Broke 2 rods, and was so sore the next day it hurt to brush my teeth. Good times

With the right tackle, Jacks are fun.

With a medium power rod and 2500 series spinning reel and 15lb line, its typically 25 to 30 minutes of fighting to get your lure back in best scenario... usually you get spooled or broken off.

I considered it a win to get my lure back and my braid back after only 5 minutes.

Started out front along the rocks below Caddy, nothing there except Jacks and ladyfish. Moved way back into the marsh between Caddy and LaFrance. Strange thing, the main bayous were way cleaner than the tiny side drains I usually sightfish for reds.... there were hundreds of thousands of pogies miles away from the gulf in the little side drains and they had completely muddied up the side drains. Never seen pogies in those numbers that far inshore. You literally couldn't fish without snagging one every other cast. Only saw 2 other boats the whole day once i moved deep into the marsh.

The biggest red I caught on topwater mid day. I was taking a short break, eating a snack, and he pushed some pogies out of a deep hole and onto a ledge and was crushing them on top. I grabbed my topwater rod, threw to him, and he ate it first cast.

Really looking forward to October... the fishing only gets better from here.
