I've heard this all my life, and it's definitely true. I'm not a big money gambler, but I was 7-3 yesterday going into the night game. A great day by my standards. KC goes up 17-0 in the first quarter and I'm already mentally adding that money to my winnings for the day. The Jets storm back and it's 23-20 KC with under 2 minutes to play. Mahomes runs the ball past the 1st down marker and is about to easily score a TD and cover the spread when he slides down at the 2 yard line!!! I just shook my head. Technically it was a smart move. The win is sealed. There is no extra point try or kick off where someone could be injured. Just take a knee twice and it's over. A win is a win. As a small time bettor that does it for fun, it wasn't a big deal, but this ESPN story details how it made the sportsbooks millions.

For the longest time I struggled to understand how this move made more sense, then I saw the Browns(I think) lose when Nick Chubb ( I think) scored instead of going down and I understand now.

It was the right move as it reduced the chance of the Jets winning down to practically zero %. If the Chiefs scored, they would be up by two scores but the game would continue. The Chiefs would kick off to the Jets giving the Jets an opportunity to score, recover an onside kick, and score again. Those are not good odds for the Jets but better for them than it is with the Chiefs taking the knee on one or two snaps.

I like to know what the spread is when I watch the end of some of these games when there is one meaningless score at the end of the game or when a team shuts down the offense near the goal line. It is funny how these actions can have an impact with the bettors.

Exactly. Had Myhomey scored there still would've been a mathematical chance that the Jets win, be it extremely small. With him sliding short of the goal line after getting the first down the chances of a Jet win was basically zero.

The commentators know the spread. They'll say something about "people with other interest in the final score".

cost me. I teased the line to -4.5 and if he scores I cover and win like $50, but when he did that I lost and they got my money ($5) It was like a 6 game parlay and I was counting the money too.
