I started load tinkering today with my stock Savage Blue/Black using 325gr FTX and 250gr Monoflex and SR4759 and 5744 powder. Before I started I drilled out the flash hole with a 5/32 drill bit and replaced the vent liner with a Lehigh. I was amazed that my first group using the 4759, CCI 209, BCR, and 250gr Monoflex fell into a .9" group. I then shot a couple of shots with RL7, but didn't care for the recoil and dropped back to more "standard" loads. The next group using the same 4759 load except for orange MMPs opened up to around 2", then about 2-3" with different combinations of 5744 and 4759 and Monoflex and FTXs, including duplicating the initial load entirely. I allowed the barrel to cool for at least 5-10 minutes between shots and redrilled the breech plug at one point. Why couldn't I duplicate the initial group? How often do you guys redrill your breech plug and/or clean your barrels when shooting for groups? I cleaned it once I got home and it was quite dirty, so I assume that this could be the culprit. Any more suggestions?
 
Even though you let it cool between shots it was never the same temp as the first 3 shots. Barrel temp is everything with these guns. Cooling rods help tremendously.
 
I have only cleaned my plug once. It changed my POI so I stopped doing that. I would say say for you I would take the gun out and try to duplicate the first group with a cold gun and a dirty plug. If you can't then maybe your gun does like a super clean plug.

BTW you only notice the recoil on the bench. When in the field the only one feeling anything is the deer the bullet hits.
 
What is the best suggestion for a cooling rod on the cheap? I have an aluminum shotgun cleaning rod that can be broken down and placed in a cooler if that would be sufficient.

CR500AFX is right on the money with the link. Copper tubing would work as well but the solid bar works better. Just need a heat sink to absorb some of the heat and keep the barrel temp stable between shots. An infrared thermometer comes in handy as well.
