A few handgun hunting Q's

I recently aquired two Super Blackhawks. One with 7" barrell and the other with 10 1/2. I want to try deer hunting with a handgun this fall with one and sell the other for diaper money. Which would you keep and why? Neither are drilled for a scope mount, but several people have said the make a mount for these pistols that replace the rear sight screw and strap to the top strap??? If I do find a mount what would be a good reasonable priced optic that would be reliable on a big 44? I'd appreciate any tips you could give.

If you do go with a scope take the pistol with you when you look and or buy.Since the eye relief varies from one make over another,shooter arm lenght,and different mount postions,it pays to check if you can get a clear sight picture before buying.

We ran into that with a simmons on a ruger redhawk (out over the barrel) worked fine on a friends super redhawk (frame and barrel). We had no trouble with a leupold 2x.

Shoot both and keep the one you like best.

Weaver makes a mount like you described. I have one on a .45 Blackhawk with a Weaver classic 2x28 scope. Works great.

I don't really like scopes on pistols. IMO they don't belong there. That being said, I have a casull with a red dot on it.

I would keep the 7 inch barrel. it would make it easier on you to carry. I dont like long barrel pistols, it's awkward to me(sp).

Do what everybody else has said, PRACTICE and RELOAD. I shoot 14.4 gr of IMR 4227 out of my .44 Ruger with a 300gr. speer sittin on the top. I've killed many with that setup.

I'd keep the 10 1/2 if they are the same caliber. Longer sight radius. Plus you can pistol whip people better with the 10 1/2 inch.

I use to shoot in pistol silhouette matches. Targets were 50,100,150,and 200 yds. I used a 7.5" Ruger Redhawk with open sights. I would just about always clear all the targets at 50 and 100 yds. The 200yd. targets about half the time and the turkeys at 150yds. were the hardest to hit for me.
