Actually it was the first hog sucker I caught on a hook and line. I think I caught a smallmouth that day too. You can catch anything on worms...

They aren't easy, it's just once in a while you may get one if you are fishing with worms on the bottom in an area where they feed. Kind of like buffalo but smaller. Also caught a redhorse the same size, the same day. First redhorse on a hook and line as well. Caught plenty of em in the cast net though. The redhorse fought well for its size, now I might have to go try and catch some big ones I know of.

they are darn good eatin too...a little boney but you can flake the meat of pretty easy when its cooked.

I've heard good things about sucker eating except for the bones I've been debating whether or not to just try one sometime, and work my way around the bones. I'd probably cook it, put it in the blender with other ingredients and make cakes out of it.

- No fish is a trash fish. As others have said, they seem to be good eating. And are a challenge to catch.
- You don't have to show me a beautiful brown fish aka smallie. I catch those a lot more often than hog suckers, since they are easier to catch.

A smallmouth should be grateful to even be considered a brown fish behind the hog sucker...A smallmouth won't hold a candle to a hog sucker when it comes to flavor.
But i guess in a semi free country some folks might not even eat "the other" brown fish.....(smallies)

Really,the fish you talk about the most are normally pictured a big bloody mess thrown up on the bank after being bow shot,and left to die.

See numerous pics by stik and spit n drum and others.TWRA doesnt protect them,or list them as a game species,as far as I knom.

Ever seen a thread about a big pile of bow shot,and left for dead small mouth,or largemouth?

In your mind,there are no trash fish,even turtles are sport,in mine there are plenty of trash fish,but it really doesnt matter,we will never I doubt fish near each other,and I really dont care how many carp,drum,gar,turtles,mud fish etc you catch.Have fun.

You haven't paid attention to things I post... I do not like turtles. I will not say a few things I have done to turtles, because there are certain people reading the forums. The only time I was excited about a turtle was when I caught a BIG snapper recently, but even then, it doesn't compare to a catfish, carp, a fat bass, or even a 9" bluegill.

Yeah the TWRA doesn't protect those fish. Does that make them trash fish? Carp are not native so I agree some population control is good sometimes. But they are still a fish and deserve the same respect as any other fish... and gar, they are native, and a very cool fish that makes a great sport fish IMO. I don't know why people shoot gar, maybe cause they get in the way of their catfishing or bass fishing. I still remember the first gar I caught, and I was super pumped about it. They don't seem to be good eating (never tried) but I release them to fight another day.

And why do you compare a hogsucker to a carp? There is no comparison... they are not even in the same family of fish.

Also I don't know why drum aren't considered sport fish. They are a lot like a bass in some ways, they put up a very good fight, and will get a lot bigger than any black bass.

If you don't want me to complain about bass boats screwing up my fishing, then I don't want to hear you complain about "trash fish" screwing up your bass fishing...

Finally figured it out,guess this is my best small mouth,caught one a little longer,but spawned out,skinny as a board.

I think you misread, I said you complain about trash fish screwing up your fishing... you said more than once in the past that you "cut the line" when you hook a carp or drum, and I bet it pisses you off pretty bad... we all have our fish we like and don't like, and I just happen to like almost any fish and hate almost any turtle. I'm not gonna try and make you like em, but why be you hatin on the fish that I catch and post here, because they are trash fish in your eyes?

BTW that's a nice smallie.. I saw that pic before, but I agree with bowgirl, it's a football. I caught a baby smallie in the little harpeth river yesterday... it's nothing more than a creek but I love a smallmouth anytime, even small ones. One day I'll get on some big ones. My biggest was 18.5 inches and you can guess the weight, I didn't have a scale back then.

They ARE trash fish? No they aren't... the technical term is "rough fish" and I think it refers to fish that are not typically considered a sport fish and are mostly unwanted by fishermen. but look at the UK, carp fishing over there is as serious as bass fishing here. So they are trash here but valuable there... in reality I'm pretty sure they are all just FISH, and forget the word trash, rough, or whatever you want to call them. There are fish you want to catch and fish you don't want to catch... you may not want to catch one species but that doesn't make em trash.
