I have a 07 mercury 90 2 stroke. It's been tuned up and a starts flawlessly at the shop. It takes a while to start when I take it to lake. It has a push the key in (choke). I have the bulb firm but it still takes a while to get running. Once it does start, it runs perfectly the rest of the day with no starting issues. Anyone have one or know a starting procedure. I've Searched the internet and tried their suggestions but still hard to start.
 
I had same style choke back in the day on a 2000 model 30 HP 2 stroke Mercury. I had to push the key in for 6-8 seconds BEFORE turning the key for the choke to make a difference starting. That seemed very long to me, and took me a while to realize it. How long are you choking it (pushing key in) before starting?

Pushing key in for about 2 seconds. Sometimes it starts and runs for about 10 seconds then stops. Push key in again and it runs again for about 10 seconds. Once it starts I put it in gear and as it models it warms up. No problems after initial start
 
I have a 95 40hp that does about the same. It'll start right up, but I have it in Neutral and rev the engine to keep it running. Otherwise it takes a little to get it running, but after that it'll start right up the rest of the day.
 
I have the same engine on my deck boat. It's a 1996 model. Mine does exactly as you describe. I squeeze the primer bulb till tight. I crank the engine over with the key pushed in until it hits, but then usually dies. Then I crank it again without the key pushed in and it usually fires right up and idles fine. I've thought about changing the engine mounted vacuum fuel pump to see if that would help but like you said, mine also runs fine all day and each restart is fires right up. Also mine runs fine at wide open throttle. I think it is just maybe how they are designed to run. Mines been running great for the past 15 years I have owned it. I've only put in 3 sets of spark plugs in 15 years, 1 new starter, and one new trim motor pump. Mines been a great engine!
 
2 strokes can be ..... particular. My old 115hp 2stroke merc would always crank 2nd try (cold start) IF
1. You choked it before cranking and only cranked for about 4-5 seconds then quit.
2. Choked then let off after 1 sec on second crank......Vrooom!
3. Cold start throttle had to be engaged but just a little or it would flood.
Here is the kicker.... You HAD to unplug the fuel line and run it till it died EVERY TIME you put the boat away to drain the carbs or it would either be a bugger to start, or the bottom carb would clog and need to be cleaned.
When it was warmed up it started with just a turn of the key the rest of the day.
Once it "told me" how it wanted to be treated it worked like a charm, every time for 20 years.
 
I've got the same motor (2009) - mine does best when neutral cold start throttle is on full, choke on - as soon as it fires and revs up, pull back throttle to about 1/2-1/4 - after the idle levels out, pull back to neutral and it should be good. Cold weather or if it hasn't been started in a while, it will take several cranks.
 
One other thing to check. Make sure your deadman switch is all the way in the right position. I just had this issue. My 9.9 always stared first or second pull. Then the second before last time out I had to pull and pull. I had to bump the throttle and it finally started. Then, the last time out it wouldn't start. I looked at the deadman switch. It looked like it was in place. But upon closer inspection, I noticed the tether was halfway pulled out. I flipped it and put the tether back in place. The motor started right up on the first pull. Just something to check every now and then.
