870 express

I have a new 870 express pump. The pump action on this gun is very stiff. Is there anything I can do to speed up the break in period? I had a very difficult time dove hunting. I have an older model just like it that is very smooth. I dont recall it ever being this hard to operate. Could there be a mechanical problem?

It is not going to be as smooth as your older gun, but shouldn't be stiff either. If you didn't clean it when you bought it new i would start there.

I have put some "fine valve grinding compound" on all of the sliding parts on an 870, pump the action for about 15 minutes, clean the gun, oil her up and she was as slick as owl ****

Thanks. The old 870 was bought new in 89. It was never as stiff as this gun is. I havent shot but maybe a couple box of shells thru the new one. I will try cleaning.

Repetition is the key. Make sure and clean the action bars well.

I did the same on a Mossberg/Maverick riot gun that was unusually tight when new. A couple hundred 'pumps' and it was a lot better.

Sound like the action bars are bent to me. The two flat bars coming out of the forearm that work the action back and forth. The can easily bend in to close together or bend out to far apart.
