870 Drill and Tapped??

Been considering getting it done. I've talked to several people, some say its fine. Others say to leave it be and use the saddle mount.

Can it be drilled and tapped without any problems? Can somebody pass along a good gunsmith in the Middle TN area for me?

There was a good one at Hero Gear in Winchester. I asked about having mine done once..... said it would be about $100.

I decided I would make do.

I went that route too, about the third shot during patterning the 870sm, the corner gouged the side of my index finger..... the next shot, you would have thought I took a knife and cut my finger off.

Yes it can be drilled and tapped properly. May I ask what you are looking to do with the gun. Red dot for turkey, scope for slugs?????

The saddle mount sucks. It is better than nothing, but a drill and tap is the way to go. Remington is drilling and tapping the 870 now from the factory, so don`t be skeered....

I use a b square on one of my 870s...and since I have always considered function over form, the crappy looks never was a consideration to me...but it just never would hold zero because it would shift around on me...so I just tig welded it into place and have been using it as a permenant fixture for the last 30 years!...and yes it does look like $#!+...but it has killed alot of deer!... :grin:

Exactly, the B square mounts are noted for constantly loosening up and loosing zero.

If you are planning on keeping the gun, get it drilled and tapped correctly and you will never regret it.

I would check to see if they make a cantlievered scope mount barrel for the 870. I know they have them for the 11/87. You are much better off to have the scope mounted to the barrel than to the reciever on a shot gun because the barrels can tend to have some play when mounting to the receiver. That way you can easily change barrels having a tru shotgun and slug gun without having to zero the scope when changing.

Yes they do make 870 barrels with a cantilever scope mount. I have one on another 870 of mine...It is an after market made by the Hastings company...It is a real shooter too, fully rifled and very well balanced...The one I have is a sabot barrel only tho..Shooting remingtons copper solids in it could cause it to rupter according to the mfg...They are really the best way to go but that wasn't an option with my first 870...

I don't believe they offer a cantilever barrel for shotshells, only rifled for slugs.

If you get it drilled and tapped then you need to get the barrel pinned or at least, shimmed. I had mine done at guns and leather. I think I paid $10 a hole and then he pinned it for another $30. Franklin Gun Shop was wanting $30 a hole.

For turkey hunting, I'd say the drilling and tapping, or B-Square would be OK, but if you're doing this for deer, I'd prefer a cantilever barrel.

Agreed but I've been to lazy to drill and tap mine yet.
