What's the consensus on the 120gr NBT? I know it's said to have a thicker jacket therefore making it a tougher bullet. But how fast is too fast. Currently looking at 3450fps, but not wanting a grenade.

I think you will be fine but there is always a 140 accubond. I killed several with the 120s but like the accubond better. I seriously doubt you have a grenade though.
 
I load the 150 eldx in my 7-08 and it does well but a 120bt at over 3400 fps in a 7mag is pushing it.
There is better bullets for the 7 mag.

My 280 with the 120 NBT (blue tip) is very accurate.
We are loading 57.5 grains of RL19 for a Nosler book FPS of 3250.
R-P brass, Fed210M primer.
For glass we have a Leupold 3.5x10 VariX-3

I like this combo because of the accuracy and low recoil.
 
I'm using Superformance powder mainly because I had a pound and no use for it. 60.5 grains is doing fair but after some feeding issues I changed my seating depth and my group has suffered so I'll play with it some. Was surprised at the readings I was getting.

Our 280 is a T/C Venture. The magazine has a plastic spacer that limits what you can do relative to reducing jump.

In this rifle it is not a factor as I have tried lots of adjustments that turned the rifle into a 2-shot gun but the accuracy differences were negligible.
 
Thinking I bumped the bullet back .020. I went from from roughly moa to 1.5-2". Still huntable but I want it better. My main concern is the speed and the bullet holding together on impact

i have killed several deer at 3295 fps in 280

that speed seems a lil high to me .... dont get me wrong i am not saying you are lying some barrels are faster than others and chrony can be off

i have killed 2 deer at 3595 fps in my saum speed verified with an ohler 35p with h414 well over a grain over max as i tipped the can


IMO having killed at least 50 deer with this bullet you dont need speed


my youth load is 2725
i killed a 200 lb buck at 269 yds punched both shoulders

youth ++ is 2869

now in 280 3295 was beyond deadly
one night i killed 3 does and a dog

the 2 killed with 7 saum the bullet held together at 50 and 30 yards


accuracy is the key

I honestly can't confirm that my chrony is reading correctly. But that's the 5 I ran over it. Grouping wasn't great and will play with the charge some more. I was a bit surprised it was this fast. I figured I'd be in the 3300 ballpark. With 150s and rl-19 I'm very slow. Think I've made it 4 grains over book max and just hitting 2900. Max book is 55 grains and they were around 2650. But my smokeless seemed fast and 243 seemed slow. Thinking about getting a light kit cause I'm usually in the shade but it's been fairly consistent until now.

Nosler BTs above 3000 fps tend to shed jackets and cause a lot of flesh damage. I don't know what you are shooting with them but if deer or large game I would go with a more well constructed bullet.
