7mm Mag...opinions, reports, etc.

7mm Rem Mag IMO is one of the least efficient cartidges made. For it to perform up to book velocities you have to have a 26" barrel which in turn makes you have a longer and heavier rifle in the field.

A 7mm WSM on the other hand is a much better choice IMO. The cartridge is much more efficient and you don't have to have such a long barrel to burn all of the powder. It uses less powder to achieve the same or better velocities and the rifle is a short action rifle so you have a shorter and lighter rifle. Ammo is tough to find for it though.

the most overrated round ever made. 30-06 will do anything a 7 mag will with more bullet choices and cheaper ammo.

Great round if you plan on medium range shooting (say 400-700 yards). Will outperform the 7WSM with the heavier bullets (160-180 grainers) unless the WSM is built on a long action.

For the average hunter in TN however, it's redundant.

i've been hunting with a 300 win mag. for the past 15-19 years.Like most said your looking at a 26 inch barrel and unless your shooting 400 yards.....Don't get me wrong, it's great to have that power but as soon as things pick up i'm gonna buy an 06 in a 22 inch barrel. But i'd never sell my long gun!

Just wondering how action length will make an improvement with performance with the WSM? I didn't know action length will make an improvement in ballistics.

put any of the WSM calibers in a long action and you can seat the bullet out longer,,freeing up case capacity allowing you to safely use more powder,,in some instances quiet a bit more..

I would LOVE to have a 6.5 WSM built on a Rem 700 action that was originally an Ultra Mag caliber

Basically one of the inlaws knows someone who is selling a Remington 700 7mag for $250...I know they go for $500 and up. He's looked at the gun and says it's in good condition. He also has a 7mag, and I shot it. It doesn't kick much more than my 50 cal muzzleloader. I looked at the ballistics and (if I read them right) they are faster and have more knockdown than the .270 (which is what I was actually considering) and the 30-06.

So...I'm gonna check it out tomorrow. We'll see.

Is the above statement based on the ballistic charateristics of the 7mm bullet vs the above?

Petzel of Field and Stream agrees with the "overrated" views of this cartridge. It still will kill just about anything out there, and at $250 you can't beat it, so buy it.

Would also need the barrel/chamber to have a longer throat. ;)

Mr. Big has got it exactly...

Due to the short case and short mag length, if you load a heavy bullet, it'll take up too much case capacity and the 7mag will smoke it... even with a wyatt's box modification installed on the short action. When built on a long action, you basically set the throat to whatever lenght bullet you plan on shooting, preferably the 180 grainers for very long range applications.

Don't get me wrong, I love both and I own both...

My 7WSM shoots 140AB's at 3400 fps with 67.5gr powder out of a 24" barrel (overall gun length is similar to a long action rifle with a 22" barrel. I've never had feeding issues which many complain of since every deer I've killed with it has been a single shot bang-flop and no need to even cycle the bolt.

My 7mm Mag is a sendero and was my first moderately long range gun. It's incredibly accurate and consistently puts 5 shots into .5". Right now I'm shooting 150gr ballistic tips (because I found a ton of factory seconds at $7 per 50) and 160gr Accubonds.

The 7mm WSM case has a definite advantage over the 270 and 300 WSM cases due to it's increased powder capacity.

I've got a couple of 7 RMs. I recently converted my 300 Winchester Mag. to a 7 RM because of the action length issue. The 300 was too long a cartridge to both use the magazine and seat anywhere near the lands unless you used it single shot. I went to the shorter 7 RM because it filled the bill. I thought about a 308 Norma Mag or a 300-338 to get the same effect but decided to go with the more common round. I built mine with a 26 inch heavy barrel and have no complaints with the 7 RM other than the needless belt. It really serves no purpose other than to prevent full length sizing all the way to the web. I don't see anything to gain from a short action when one is building a beanfield rifle where weight isn't the issue and if I want a shorter woods rifle I'm going to use a larger caliber like the .358. A bit of the arguments for the difference depends on your individual use. Mine just doesn't need one. I've just never fallen in love with the short mag cartridges but if I ever do it will be a 300WSM. It has a pretty big following and I see the benefits on accuracy with the short compact powder column.

I have had both the 7mm Rem Mag and the 7mmWSM. I loved both. Went back to the 7mm Rem Mag because of a wider variety of ammo. Very good deer cartridge IMO! Some may think its over rated but I say the same about a 30-06 even though it is a very good whitetail cartridge. Bottom line if your thinking about get'n a 7mm Mag I say go for it! It will deffinately get the job done!!!

Not sure what you have or have not shot but you can expect some good recoil!!! Not too terrible though.

the 30-06 is the most versatile round ever made. good enough for anything in north america except maybe big coastal grizzlies and most game in africa.

for $250, i would buy the gun and trade it for something i wanted.

Stik, that's what I will probably do. It doesn't have a scope on it, but I can't complain having bought it for $225. :) I will put a scope on it and try it out. If I don't like it, I will sell/trade it for something else.

Over the years my 7 mm Mag has droped the deer on the spot 9 times out of 10 so there's been no tracking them.

I just traded for a Savage 111 chambered in 7mm Remington Magnum and took it hunting yesterday for the first time. I took a 7 point Whitetail at 100 yards. Upon bullet contact the buck raised up on it's hind legs and fell forward.....dead. I have hunted with a Savage 110 chambered in Winchester 270 for several years. After the performance of the 7 Mag yesterday I will put my 270 in the gun cabinet to collect dust. I have never had a deer drop as that buck did. Yes, the &mm Mag is a powder waster but a well proven cartridge.

that was more shot placement than caliber. a 270 will do the same thing. mine did yesterday morning.

It may be the bullet selection rather than shot placement because I have taken many deer with my 270 with the shot placement being in the same area and have never had the damage placed on the deer as I saw Friday when I quatered this one up. IMO the 7 Mag out performs the 270. I guess I see on the next deer.

I can't disagree with that at all!!! But I'd take a 7mm mag over a 30-06 any day for N American game. Just a matter of opinion I guess. And as far as it being inefficient unless u have a 26" barrel, Well I do have a 26" barrel, but good point though, most bolt action 7 mags wont have a 26 inch barrel. Don't remember who posted that about the barrel but thanks.... learn something new every day! That's why I love this sight!!!
