I'm looking for a long range deer gun, I already have a 300wsm and it does fine, but bigger is better, right? Looking for input on a fast long range deer/bigfoot rifle from people who have used them. I would like to buy an off the shelf rifle (rem700)or something in that price range, any help would be appreciated.
 
Well if 200fps is worth it to you,and when ain't it :D Go for it.

I wouldn't mind having a 7 Rum but never found one in my rifle of choice.

That said I feel the 300 Rum is the better of the two due manialy to beter/more ammo choices and rifles for it.If your set on a Rem 700 then it really doesn't matter.
 
I was kinda lookin at a Remington 700 SPS in 300 or 7mm Ultra mag. I really like 7mm's for accuracy and I reload so I can tinker and get what I want as far as bullets and weights, assuming they will shoot good. It will most likely depend on what I find at the gunshow, either one would be a good choice. If I get the 300 RUM, I may get rid of the 300wsm, the RUM can be loaded down to wsm velocity if I wanted to.
 
I bought a Savage 300 RUM to get the action and it never got the conversion once I shot it. Accuracy has been easy to come by with the rifle with even the factory corelockts shooting under one moa. With the 300 there will be heavier bullets available should you want to use the rifle for heavier Western,Alaskan, or even African hunting. The 7mm. would probably be best if all you plan to use it for is deer.

IMHO a rifle in either of these calibers is worthless unless it exhibits extreme accuracy for long range shooting. As I see it that is their only purpose. But that they do well. I'd like to see a 7RUM with a fire lit under the 120 ballistic tip just to see what happened. Your point blank range should be way out there. I've used them in 7mm Remington Magnums at 3400 fps. and been satisfied and wonder what they would do at even higher velocity. That might be the limit though.

Ditto. The RUM adds maybe 20-30 yds of max point blank range. That can be compensated with your WSM with a slight rise in elevation. The extra punishment on the receiving end, IMO, is not worth the extra 25-30 yds.

It is nice to get another rifle to put in the safe though. ;)
 
I`d go with a 7mm, maybe not the Ultra Mag, but a 7mm STW, that to me is the finest factory round ever devised. They are extremely accurate, and available in Sako, Remington, Browning, (cough) and a few others. :D

The 7 has it over the 30 to me due the higher BC`s in the good weights for deer. If you look at Berger or JLK`s site where BC`s are listed, the 7`s are the highest listed. I`d not shoot anything heavier in the 300 WSM than a 180, due the length of the heavier bullets robbing powder space.

A 7 STW pushing a nice slippery 140 Accubond at over 3400 fps is a very flat shooting ride, with the accuracy makes distant shots very doable.

The crazed rifle loony I am, I decided to raise the bar and came up with a wildcat based off the 338RUM, which is a .090" shorter case than its parent and had 2 reamers made, one necked to 7 and the other 30. I sent a case with a 140 grain where it will fit in the Remington facory magazine.

I am getting 3650+ with the 140 Accubond. I just the other day got out the Stoney Point modified case and checked the rifle out for the Hornady 162 A-Max and it is looking great. The bearing surface of the bullet is right at the neck/shoulder of the brass.

I`m thinking RL25 or H1000 may just be the stuff to get this bullet to the 3400+ area. I`ll have to check the charts to see how the trajectory is affected with the .625 BC to the 600 yd mark.

I bought a Rem. 7RUM made by Remington's custom shop. It is the 700 Alaskan Wilderness Rifle.The factory Swift Scirocco 150 gr. shoots sub groups.I got some 139 gr. hornady interbonds from Conley Precision Cartridge and they shoot extremely well.I plan on using the Swifts this fall in British Columbia.
 
I`ve loaded the STW faster than the RUM,,maybe if the bbl was longer the RUM would go in 7mm but at 26 inches you wont gain anything..

I`d love to try a Dakota

the 300 RUM will smoke a WSM ,,
 
Depends on what your definition of 'long range' is...

If it's out to 500 yards, I wouldn't change a thing. The 300 WSM will come close to RUM velocities with the lighter bullets.

If you plan on regularly shooting out to around 700 and up, you just can't beat the 300 RUM (with a barrel longer than the factory 26") as you can push the heavy for caliber bullets at MUCH higher speeds than the 300 WSM (due to the short mag box in the 300 WSM).

Past 1000 yards, you would be hard pressed to beat one of the 338's (338-300 RUM improved, Laupa, or Weatherby)
 
Alot of good info. I load the 168gr TSX and 165gr NBT's in the 300wsm and they shoot .6-7 moa with full power hunting loads and a little better backing off the powder charge. I have no problem shooting deer at 350-400yds with the current setup with a good rest. After sifting through the info I starting to think that the RUM is not a big enough difference to merit a new gun in that caliber, considering the reloading options that are available. I have several sub-moa deer rifle, to be honest I just have an itch for a new caliber/gun. I thought about big-bore, but my 450 Marlin does good in that respect or maybe small bore at extreme velocity. I have a yearly bonus coming up and this is the one time of year that I get something for myself, I would like to spend $1000 or less on the gun. Sorry for being long winded, but I have made too many quick decisions in the past and ended up unhappy with my purchase. I really don't NEED any more guns, but thats probably true for most of us on this forum, it's about WANT. Thanks for the input! I would like to get into longer distance shooting, but the range is limited to 300yds except for matches, i guess I just need to sign up for some classes/matches at the rifle club. (Chattanooga Rifle Club)
 
Let's see. I own a 300WSM, a 7MM STW and a 300RUM. This should be fun! I bought the 300WSM first and thought I had a long range rig. And I do, with 150gr or maybe 165gr bullets but these usually have shorter barrels. I then bought the 300RUM and knew I had the ultimate long range rifle. And I do with a range of bullets including heavier weights. This was all until Tim got me worked up about the 7MM STW. It's what I used to kill an Antelope at 550 yards last August.

If you don't need the heavier bullet I vote 7MM STW all the way. If you've got to go bigger than 160gr get a 300RUM.

The 300WSM is my baby and when I go after a new animal it gets the call. I LOVE it but have learned to love the STW almost as much.
 
Nice rifle, but too late.

I decided to go with the Remington 700 SPS in 300RUM. I shot a box of the 150gr Powerlevel I ammo, 1.5moa. :eek:
As we speak I'm working on some reloads, 165gr NBT and 130gr TSX, that will be a smokin load if it shoots good. The wind is supposed to be 20mph around here tomorrow, not good for range work. Hopefully this this sucker will dial in and make a good long range deer rifle, 300-500yds. I realize that not long range for some of yall sniper types, but it is for me. :)

I now have a surplus Remington 700 SPS in 300wsm that I would trade for a Rem 700 in a different caliber, small caliber or odd caliber preferred.
 
Funny that you would post a pic of ole BigFeet Renegade.My hunting partner and I are going to British Columbia in September for elk and mule deer.Well he calls me the other night and says hes been watchin the History Channel and they were documenting a trip by a group of guys researching sasquatches.Wonder what a full body mount on that rascal would cost.Oh yea,I reminded him that I can still outrun him.
