7MM 08 vs .308 vs .270

Since I will be hunting exclusively here in TN and don't foresee myself going out West anytime soon, I have decided between these three calibers. Which one of the following would you prefer?

7MM 08

.308

.270

I like all the .308 based rounds and there's not really much difference between 7mm-08 and .308. I prefer and use .243 but they all work great.

This looks like a question I posted a good while back. I don't remember the answer, though.

I don't own either caliber, but I've heard that the 7-08 is the ultimate shooting experience. Good ballistics with mild recoil. Unless you reload, those bullets will be expensive.

7-08 and the 308 are short action calibers...270 is a long action. From what I'm told, the short action is easier to maneuver for quick shots than a heavier long action (and with a longer barrel) rifle.

A lot of people will say you can't go wrong with either caliber for Tennessee deer hunting.

the 270 and 308 ammo is the most readily availiable and less expensive than the 7mm-08
the 7mm-08 is a great round but the factory choices are limited on ammo
in tennessee you can't go wrong with any of the three
i dropped deer in their track with all three

Years ago i was constantly trading guns and using different calibers. Then about 15 years ago i traded for a model 7mm/08. Have not traded since nor do i plan to. I have used alot of calibers on whitetail deer and have never seen anything perform like the 7mm/08.

270 simply because of ammo availability. Nothing wrong with a 7mm-08 or 308 by any means though. If you prefer a short action gun go with the 308 or 243. 7mm-08 ammo can get pricey.

I hear this all the time about certain ammo. How could you forget the ammo? gloves, socks, emergency lighter, but ammo?
Got enough here for my grandkids to kill deer and my son isn't even married .....yet!

I obviously like the 7mm08...gets the job done without alot of recoil so it's fun to shoot and puts enough energy downfield to drop even an elk within 200 yards. Now fellas, don't make me pull out the Mauser 7x57 history again with all the elephants killed with that round.(the 7mm08's twin)

IF your worried about the end of the world crap and you don't have but one rifle....get the .308.

for deer any will work, ive shot 7-08 for years deer hunting. shot several thousand rounds of 308 in the military. of the two maybe a little better ballistics with the 7-08 even with heavier bullets.

a long action is not going to figure in much in weight or bolt throw, its only a 1/2" longer. if you were to hunt bean fields in west tenn, the 270 might give you a little edge, but only if you can shoot.

It really doesn't matter. Draw straws and the last one standing will do anything the other will. I have to say that the 243 will do the same as the others as well.

Since your considering the 7-08 and the 308, you might as well consider the 260 also. I like mine. Shot all the calibers you mentioned and I'd just as well have the 260.

I would rather have a 260 over a 7-08, but I handload so ammo availability does not factor in my decision. It's hard to argue the difference between the 270, 7-08, and 308. If it were between those rounds I would worry more about which rifle felt best in my hands.

I like them all but i am a 270 man and have been for many years. i currently use the Model 70 in Extreme weatherSS and chambered in 270 wsm!

lots of opinions. lets look at the facts. all are great with plenty of factory offerings, but most folks reload anyway so not an issue probably. 7-08 and 308 are shoot actions and can be chambered in shorter lighter guns. if you are going to shoot a light bullet, 708 is a better option because if you shoot the same weight bullet, then the 7mm will have a higher sectional density and ballistic coefficient. i would take a look at the kimber 84m, model 7 cdl, browning micro medallion

Got a .270...I like the wide variety of ammo available. Every manufacturer offers a bullet in .270.

308 or 243 is like a crescent wrench or vise grips u can do about anything with it. plus low recoil and excellent accuracy

didnt you already have a 270? either way, its a good all around caliber, and they are making more bullet weight options in it as well.

Tons of Military surplus ammo available. Interchangeable with AR type 308 weapons systems.

Great round to have in a SHTF scenario.

Very accurate and low recoil.

i have a model seven remington in 308 . love it . i was shocked last year when i shot a deer at 50 yards with a 150 grain sst hornady and the bullet stoped just under the skin on the other side . deer didnt make it far thats all that matters.
