ttsx or the nosler ballistic tips, first 7 ive owned all shots will be with in 150 yards

As far as the BT's go, I've heard numerous stories of how they fragment at close range, out to 300 yds or so I believe. Now if you could get some Nosler Accubond's they would perform better I believe, better than the BT's that is. I'm not up on ttsx performance at all.

Keep muzzle velocity around 3000 fps and you should be good. Ballistic Tips are okay as long as they do not impact over 2700-2800 fps. When they do, they are likely to fragment which reduces penetration and overall performance. I have killed a pile of deer with them over the years in my .270, but muzzle velocity was always 2800-3000 fps, thus I rarely, if ever, had an issue. You can not go wrong with ttsx or the Accubonds, regardless of the round you choose. Good luck with your choice.

i firmly dis agree with the above statments
the 284 120 nbt is the exception to the rule

10 years ago we milled several 284 bt down the 120 nbt has a thicker jacket

i have killed deer with mel vel 3600 and 3295 7 saum 280 rem killed 2 @ 3600 less than 50 bullet held fine killed at least 20 with 3295 in side of 50 yards

for a 7/08 it is a great bullet and very accurate i have killed several several with 2725 mel vel and 2869 vel out to 305 yds

like i said the 120 nbt in 284 is the exception other than that i agree with the above post

barnes bullets no worries

accubonds no worries

120 nbt no worries

^^^There you have it, firsthand experience. I knew the 120 BT had a thicker jacket, but never knew they could withstand those muzzle velocities and not fragment to some degree.

Lade - were any shots under 100 yards with those 3400+ MVs?

The NBT 120 and the Barnes TTSX 120 fly the same in my Axis. Both are loaded with 42.5 grains of RL15 and are ignited by Federal 210M primers.

It kills me Nosler came out with the Blue-tipped 120's, great sense of humor. I bet Barnes didn't think so.

The Barnes is quite a bit more expensive.

I don't reload so would the federal premium in the 140 be good? I cant find the premium in 120

I have shot the Barnes Vortex ammo with 120 TTSX bullet and like it. I now load the same bullet with 44 grains of Varget.

i have killed a several with that load up close

I Had very bad results from the 140gr ballistic tip. They Failed to exit causing a bad bloodtrail. Since then i switched to 139gr hornady interloct and havent looked back. Many deer kills with these and all had great expantion and had a exit wound. Shots were from 60yards-200 yards

I shoot 162 grain Interlocks out of my 7mags. If it is a close shot, they won't exit either but the deer usually won't make it 20 yards.

I have been shooting the 140 grain .284 Accubonds in my 280.

IMR4350, R-P Brass, Federal 210M primers, SAAMI COL due to magazine.

Ranges from 74 paces to right at 100

I have yet to recover a bullet or lose a shot deer. I have not had any blow-ups with any weight or caliber Accubond and all of my loads for this bullet type are Nosler or Alliant book max.

I am more than satisfied with performance in the field.

In a 7mm08 you will be very happy.

I shoot 140 Barnes in my gun. Probably will never change. Wife and daughter shoot the 120 grain Barnes vortex just for less kick. They perform just as well.

I agree a bonded bullet/barnes TTSX, TSX or similar bullet will produce less meat damage at shorter distances and I practice that rule of thumb as much as possible but I've been using the .284 140 BT for over 11 yrs in my 280 with excellent results. I use it only on fields where shots are 200-400 yds or over and I have never not had a complete pass through. I do shoot barnes TSX also but if I do my part and hit them where I aim, the BT performs.
It's awesome on yotes at 300 yds.
