I'm just starting out with a 7-08 this year and have sighted in with Rem Cor-Lokt 140 gr sp. It has served me well in 30-06 so I'm going to see how it performs in the 7-08 I guess.
 
Federal Fusions in your choice of 120 or 140 gr. Not too awful expensive either.

For the handloaders in the crowd, a 120 gr. Nosler Ballistic tip and IMR 8208XBR is my favorite for 7-08s.
 
Shot a buck at about 30 yards with the Hornady SST last year and it went less than 15 yards. There were no signs of the bullet fragmenting badly or anything. No complaints here.

I have experienced the same with the SST and BT and have changed to a bonded bullet which works well in the woods. A interbond or accubond is what I use now but those are premium bullets.
You may have good luck with a core lokt. Looks like mixed reviews about the fusion bullets for I have heard they leave a vicious wound.
 
I have always shot core lockts. No problems here. I was also just given 3 boxes of BT's. So i imagine i will be trying those out soon.
 
I tried some Nosler trophy grade accubond in my 7-08 last year in my savage, they shoot great and don't bloodshot the meat.

My experience is the Accubonds behave more or less like partitions. we had a close shot that DID NOT blow up. We had a longer shot through and through.

As a partition shooter for over 25 years I can say i am nearly 100% converted to Accubonds as my hunting bullet.

I think it is weird as can be Nosler does not produce a premium bullet in 120 grain weight for the 284 family.

i agree

i have begged them for years for a 120 accubond but to be honest i now want a 120 e tip

i have been so pleased with 140 and 150 gn e tips in 284 i just love them


how ever the 120 nbt is IMO the exception
the bullet has a thicker jacket and i have pushed it to 3600 (3595) FPS AND KILLED DEER AT 25 ISH AND 50 ISH YDS

it will hold up fine i have killed easy over 50-60 deer with that bullet in 284 from speeds 2725 fps 2869 fps in 7/08 and 3295 in a long bbl .280 and the 2 mentioned above in 7 saum

it is a great bullet

I've used some Barnes TSX and you are correct, guaranteed penetration without any fragmentation.
 
Ive got 2 7mm08s both are sighted in with factory Hornadys american whitetail 139gr soft point. These loads are cheap, shoot very well and hammer deer. I have had great success with them. The two times I've used balistic tips in this caliber ive not been impressed but since switching to these loads Im really happy

I hear people say the same/ praise the 120 BT but from my experience that nasty wound was about the same as any other BT, that's why I'm changing to a Accubond.

we had on old thread on the old site years ago where the bt bullets were milled in half

as far as the accubond it is a great bullet i have killed may with it as well but i am really loving the e-tip
 
I plan to try out those etips on some does this fall. I'm sure they'll perform like the Barnes TSX which I like also.

I think it is easier to ding a lead tip. I've dinged quite a few of both. No matter the bullet I put dinged ones aside and use them as foulers or shoot-em-ups.

I have a Forster bullet puller and collets for every caliber. If one is dinged bad enough I pull it and toss it.

The ballistic tip problem is the jacket is thin and at close range a bone hit tends to cause the bullet to separate.

OTOH the 120 NBT and some of the "Hunting Ballistic Tip' bullets have a thicker jacket. The incidence of separation is much less frequent.

So far every AccuBond has penetrated through and through no sign of separation. I have some picks:
the first one is a fair buck I smacked with a 150 grain Accubond over 60 grains of IMR4350 in R-P Brass and Fed 210M primers. Just a neat hole right through the shoulder/leg bone. Deer went about 40 yards died on his feet.

This doe was shot by my son. The deer dropped where he stood. The bullet cause his backbone to separate without actually smacking the bone. I was very impressed.
