777 v. Blackhorn 209?

What is the main difference/advantage of BH 209 compared to 777? I currently shoot an Omega with 105 grains of 777 and a Barnes MZ if its relevant.

60+ shots without ever having the bore get tight. A lot less corrosive than any other sub out there, consistent velocity, each granule is consistent. No dust at the bottom of the can, so its the same grade the first scoop, to the last scoop.

Bh209 has a nitrocellulose base so it can be considered a smokeless powder.

Sold in a 10 oz bottle while 777 is sold by the pound.

Takes the right 209 primer to set it off.

The guys using it seem to like it.

and the last shot is just as accurate as the 1st, even though people will still say to be accurate you have to run a wet patch, then dry patch between shots. I only shot 6 times Sunday trying some different sabots. 1st 3 shot group was inside the 1" square @ 100 yards, adjusted scope and the next 3 shots where still inside the 1" square and two where in the same hole. Why would you want to fool around with wet and dry patches in the field?

Any major sporting good chains carry Blackhorn? (Gander, Wal-Mart, etc.) I don't recall ever seeing this on the shelves.

I've been shooting 777 pellets ever since I started ML hunting about 6 years ago.And I've never expereienced this "crud ring" everyone talks about. Well this past spring I thought I was gonna switch to blackhorn, and switch bullets,away from the Hornady FPB to something a little more long range friendly. So I shot almost a whole bottle of blackhorn. I will say that I did like it alot..It's super clean,and hardly no smoke.I tried the Barnes bullets,and TC shockwave bullets,and tried numerous powder charges,but no matter how I tweaked the blackhorn powder,I just couldn't get it to shoot as good as 100grs of 777 and 1 hornady FPB. Heck I couldn't even get the Blackhorn to shoot the Hornady FPB good..So here I am,I'll be useing 777 for the 7th year with no crud ring.

What I called a crud ring was the area where the bullet was seated it would get a little tighter and harder to push for the last couple inches. My encore shot different after the 1st shot with 777, but I had it sighted in with a dirty barrel using power belts so I could shoot 5 or 6 times without swabbing. I was shooting SST Hornady last year using blackhorn and with the sabots that came with them was lucky to get a 3 shot group in side 3". Switched to Harvester smooth sabot that ratsnakeboogy suggested and with the same bullet and 100 grains it's back to under a 1" group.

I had a big problem with the bh209 ,it shot great, went hunting for the first time with it .very cold morning ,huge buck cuuuuuuboom ,hang fire ,buck stays there ,reload cuuuuuuuuuuuuuuboom another hang fire .buck runs off . I get down shoot the gun into target 3 more times hangfire every time. Never did this before the temp change, I tried diff primmers same crapp, so went back to 777 and same primers have not had anymore problems. Life lesson lerned.

That's odd the cold weather effected it like that, shot 3 deer last year during late ML season and it was around zero at the time.

Im not saying i think it was the cold,but it was a veriable,It was probably the primmer. It was just my luck that they worked flawlessly till that cold foggy morn. The stuff is just too finicky for me. I need something made by Tonka. If you know what i meen lol

Gander Mountain and Bass Pro do, Wall Mart Don't.

What type primers? Federal 209 primers will set BH209 off every time.

I believe that was the primers i was using,at least i know they were shotgun primers cause that is what they recamended so that is what i bought.

I have never had a misfire/hangfire with Blackhorn and the CCI Mag 209.

There are a few makes which requires the hole in the breech plug to be made a little bigger.

Mine is a knight long range mz . I am not drilling on it. That prob would work . The 777 works fine.

What size hole in the breech plug is needed? I'm using the cci 209m primers will these work? Been thinking of trying bh209

CVA / Traditions use a 3mm or #32 drill bit to clean the flash channel

TC/Knight use an 1/8" drill bit

I read that on other sites and also the Blackhorn website about some ML's are miss firing after a couple shots due to the hole being too small and getting some buildup. At first you could send them your breech plug and they would do it for no charge, but I think they tell you now to take it to a gun smith to have it done. They recommend a hot 209 primer and Federal is the hottest follwed by a CCI Mag primer. I'm using the CCI mags and my brother has the Federals and neither has had any issues.

Thanks for the info ,i might buy an extra breech plug for it ,then have it drilled out by a gunsmith that way i can allways switch back if i want to .

my long range hunter has no problem shooting a whole can at one range session with no cleaning, my breach plug is factory with no modifications. i use the cci mag primers and have no trouble

So once the breach plug is drilled it can not be used on 777 any more?

i learned a long time ago if something works dont mess with it so i am not changing from my triple 777.

guys the breech plug drilling is only needed on some guns.

Post what you shoot and then i can tell you if it needs to be modified or not.
