Got this a couple weeks ago from a guy I met fishing at Williamsport. He is wanting to sell his 14 foot jon boat and had no use for the motor that came with it so he gave it to me. If anyone is legitimately interested in a 14 foot flat bottom (I think alumacraft) on a decent trailer, let me know and I can get in touch with him (located in Columbia TN).

Anyway, it's called a Ted Williams 7 hp motor sold by Sears and I'm guessing an early '70s model. 2 stroke, air cooled engine but still has a water pump for the exhaust. Finally got her running today after some tinkering and fresh gas in the tank. It even has a small gas tank on top that is built in, good for backup. 24:1 gas oil ratio from what I've found online. Gonna be smoky

Hopefully will push my 13 foot Cherokee all right until I have saved some cash for a decent 20 horse motor.

Anyone familiar with these motors?

Thought I would share. If anyone is familiar with this motor, feel free to chime in some info on it, as it is new to me.
 
my dad has a 9hp ted Williams on a 12 ft. fiberglass hull. it takes about 45 minutes to cover the 2 miles from his house to the dam.

what kind of hull is it, a tri hull?
 
Took her on water today, motor would keep dying on me. Impeller needs replaced for sure, hopefully that is the only cause of trouble. Exhaust may have just been overheating, I'm not sure. The few seconds I had her in gear it pushed the boat surprisingly well.

Yes what you have there is a Ted Williams 7.5 hp motor sold in the 70's. Its missing some parts, but since I have the same motor I was able to id it. If the impeller isn't working it will over heat pretty quick. Thats one of the few parts you can still get for it, but its a pain to replace. But I think you have carb trouble since it cuts out on you.
 
I had one of those back in the day. It did real good until the magneto or something electrical started giving trouble. It was gonna cost just about as much to replace as the whole motor was new.
