Been curious about a 7.62x39 for a while, but dont know anything about it, for instance : what available for reloading (bullets types,brass..) or how it compares to other rounds in its size class (always been a .243 guy), so school me on all thimgs 7.62x39.

Thanx in advance.

Cheap ammo is available, but there are a few different "standard" groove diameters (.310, .311, etc) that can make bullet availability and reloading difficult. If they were .308 diameter groove diameters then they would have a lot of bullet options and better "reliable" accuracy, but there is not much quality or quantity available in that bullet diameter.

Some also complain about the case taper, but much of that is in reference to auto loaders.

Performance is on par with 30-30, but better BC than the flat nosed bullets

Ive read post that some love that round, I was curious as to why and why option it offered, I dont think its for me, probably go with something more well known and has aftermarket support already available.

Big thanks for the info, gents.

I picked up a very cheap AR chambered in 7.62x39 from a guy at work. I think I payed a whopping $200 for it. I alread had a AK and a bunch of steel cased ammo. I was very surprised at how accurate it is. Especially when compared to my AK. I will tell you that to get it to shoot the cheap steel cased ammo reliably I had to get an enhanced firing pin. After that it is perfect. I plan on my boy killing his first deer with it this fall.

I don't know about "more well known" it has been around since it was developed in 1944 and all major manufacturers produce ammo for it. It is just not the best for reloading due to the above mentioned issues.
