Been a pretty good season so far. I've been seeing more deer this year than in previous years. I've even passed on two basket racked 8 pointers and a couple of spikes during archery season.
But my number one priority is putting meat in the freezer.
I saw this six point opening morning of Archery but he was just a little too far for a shot.
Yesterday morning I went to town and purchased a new smoker, now all I needed was some meat lol.
Since they were calling for rain I decided to hunt one of my shooting houses. Got situated in the blind around 3:00 [Eastern time] and 15 minutes later had a lone doe come in to the food plot. She was picking around but was acting a little antsy, and kept looking up the ridge. That got the old heart thumping knowing that a buck might be coming down to check her out. Sure enough, I heard the unmistakable sound of a deer headed to the food plot. He stepped out at 50 yds, and I let the hammer fall. He dropped at the shot, no trailing needed.
Not the largest Deer antler wise I've ever killed but I'm thankful to have him.
BTW, I have one of his shoulders on the "new" smoker as we speak.

Please let me know how the smoked shoulder turns out. I just got a new pellet grill and am wanting to smoke a whole quarter but not killed anything yet
I sure will, it's been on 3 hours now at 225 degrees. Going to pull it off here in a bit and cover in foil and pop it in the oven for a few more hours.

Man that is a hoss of a 6'er! Congrats on a dandy!
Yeah, he was a fatty lol. I'm on the scrawny side at 5'5" and 130 lbs soaking wet. It was all I could do to get him in the back of the Ranger.;) Luckily I could drive right up to him so no dragging was required.

Huge 6!!!

I just bought a pellet grill recently and man, I wished I'd bought one long ago. Been eating venison, chicken, fish, everything out of that thing and it's awesome. Venison doesn't dry out & get chewy like on my gas grill. It stays juicy moist and fork tender. And having a venison steak with smoke ring is as good as it gets!

Nice big 6. Congrats. Please let me know how the smoked shoulder turns out. I just got a new pellet grill and am wanting to smoke a whole quarter but not killed anything yet
Well, I smoked it for 3 hrs, wrapped it in foil and put it in the oven for 3hrs at 250 degrees. It was pull off the bone tender!! The shoulder bone looked like the buzzards had picked it clean lol.
You will be surprised at how much more meat you get by smoking it VS, trying to cut the meat off for burger etc.
