6.8 spc build

Supposed to be hyper-accurate, bullets are hard to come by unless you load your own. Supposedly, this is the cartridge designed/built by US Military snipers and Remington, kill at 500 yards, less weight than 308, more punch than 223, all out of a 16 inch barrel. I would wager a 24" bolt gun could get 3000 FPS, could be dreaming there.

My kids want one on an AR platform.

On a bolt gun or AR platform?

I've got a Remmy s/s bull barrel 700 I originally bought as what I though would be a perfect cartridge for kids.

IIRC, I'm getting around 2600fps with the 130 grainers out of a 24" bbl. I like the concept, but for some reason, it's always seemed so ho-hum to me... no real WOW factor, like a 6.5 grendel in the AR or now the suppressed subsonic 300 blackout in AR platform.

Ton of stories and articles on the web about this round on the AR platform. Kind of a common build seems like. I'd be interested in following your build if you decide to go ahead, my twins want one.

After all the press about this round I too would have expected a WOW factor and 2600 out of a Rem 700 isn't gonna do it.

I wasn't that impressed with mine either.I mean it was ok for what it was but I didn't get that warm and fuzzy feeling inside after hunting with it.

Paincave-Meglo-
Could you guys expand on that? I'd personally hate to go the expense of building out an AR platform using the 6.8 and come away feeling like I made a mistake.

This round is supposed to be dead-eye Richard out to 500 yards, shoots one-hole at 100, that kind of junk, great knock-down power. I am reeling in my kids on this topic until I see more hands-on experience because two out of two that aren't saluting the flag on this deal is really not good at all.

Do you guys handload?

Sure appreciate your input.

I can't remember any of my loads and what not,but I couldn't get it to where I felt it should be.The AR platform with a 16'bbl may be better if you were wanting a SHTF/Zombie apocolypse type rifle than a 5.56 but as far as a deer rifle, there are to many options out there that I like better.

I guess it really depends on what you're wanting it for... it's sorta a 'compromise' between all the other AR rounds, but excels at nothing.

For varmits, you can't beat the ultra fast 223
For long range shooting, the 6.5 grendel is tops
For coolness factor and better quiet knockdown power than the HK-MP5SD, the subsonic suppressed 300 blackout is the bomb.

And you get the advantage of performance nearly equal to the 6.8 SPC with the full power 300 blackout loads.

Another vote for the 300 blackout... since becoming a SAMMI cartridge last January, it's really taken off, now with new manufacturers jumping on board almost daily. Factory loads (both supersonic, as well as subsonic), factory rifles, uppers, complete rifles, as well as the full complement of reloading components and dies. Also, the bullet manufacturers are really jumping on board to develop lighter 30 cal bullets that will open up at lower velocities.
