6.5 Creedmoor questions

I am fixing to sell a few guns to fund a new gun I am wanting. I am looking at getting Bergara's new B14 HMR. My questions are.... for you guys that have a 6.5 Creedmoor, which factory hunting ammo works good in your gun and which scope would be the best? From my searching, Hornady's SST looks hard to beat and Vortex makes a good 6-24x50 but worried this power may be too high for hunting.

Just because a scope has a high magnification available, you don't always have to use it. :) I have a 4.5-30 on one of my guns, but it never really sees 30x. It's nice to know it's there if I need it though.

I shoot the Hornady 140 SST and they do good. I have a Vortex 6-20x44 on my Ruger American Predator in 6.5 Creedmoor.
My longest shot where I hunt is approx 250 yds so rarely does it get turned up past 6 power, but it is nice to be able to dial up the power if needed to make sure that the deer I'm about to shoot don't have nubs on his head.
I reload so my load selection can vary from what I feel like hunting with, but I will tell you that if you reload that H4350 is the go to powder for the Creedmoor.

Check out the Hornady Precision Hunter with the ELD-X bullet. They are fantastic.

I have a Vortex Viper 4-16x44 HS-T on my 6.5 Creedmoor and it is great formy setup. I may deer hunt with this rifle a little but not if I am carrying it very far. Mine is a Tikka T3X CTR so it is a little heavy already and the scope is pretty beefy as well.

I say that Bergara about a month after I bought my CTR. It is pretty sweet for sure.

I'm shooting the Ruger Predator, mine seems to like the Hornady Precision Hunter 143grn ELD-x bullets the best.
However I find myself shooting the Hornady Whitetails more often with darn similar accuracy results, so far my further shots have been with the HW's. I have no complaints for a 20 dollar box of shells

IMHO if your just hunting with the rifle, I would keep it simple. I have a 3x9x40 Nikon Buckmaster on mine, I don't have any issue hitting anything beyond 300 yards with that scope and wouldn't hesitate shooting 400 or 500 with it. Besides, your not likely to be taking 1200 yard shots in a typical hunting scenario.

That B14 is a fine rifle, I wish I had seen it when I bought my Predator.

I have a 6.5 Creedmoor in a Ruger American Predator, and I also have the ballistic twin 260 REM in a Ruger M77 Compact. I reload, but I always buy a few boxes of factory Ammo to get my initial brass, My creed did very well with the approx $20/box American Whitetail 129 gr Interlock (Hornady). I also shot a box of Hornady Superformance 129 gr SST, but they were a tad less accurate than the American Whitetail. My current handloads are Speer Hot Cor 140 gr with H4350 powder.

For scopes, most of my guns have 2-7X35 scopes, my 270 WIN has a 3-9X40, and my Creed has a 4-12X40 in case I want to hunt over an open field. Honestly, when I shot a coyote and two does with my Creed last fall, I really wish it had the 2-7 on it. I see deer within 50 yards more often than over 200 yards, and the extra field of view of a low power scope is nice.

Brand is a personal preference. I try to stay in the $200-$250 price range. I like Burris and Leupold best, And Nikon, though the Nikon is slipping a bit on my list. I'd like to try a new Redfield or a Vortex, but since I have no personal experience with these, I won't rate them.

That's very interesting that you got better accuracy out of the interlocks over the SST. I have always liked the interlocks..... just like the extra speed with the SST.

Well, there are other differences in those loads than the SST vs. Interlock. The Superformance loads use a different powder (I've heard it's not the same as the canister Superformance powder) and it's rated at a significant higher velocity, so maybe my gun just didn't like that combo.

Remember, these differences are insignificant when talking hunting loads. The "Bad" loads were 1.5 MOA and the "Good" loads were .75 MOA. I'm sure with match grade bullets and diligent load development practices, you should be able to get 1/5 MOA from most modern rifles in the 6.5 CM.

I've used both Interlock and SST in a few calibers (243, 7mm-08, 270 WIN). The Interlock is devastating at close range. My only complaint with the Interlock is the exposed lead tips can get misshapen in handling and loading. Experts say anomalies in the meplat really don't affect accuracy much, but I feel more confident if they are nice and smooth like the plastic tipped SST.

Yea I very much agree with you on the lead tips. I always wondered if a little mishaped lead would effect accuracy by much. As far as killing a deer, I have had good results from both the SST and interlock. I love the price of the interlocks for hunting.

I've always suspected a damaged lead tip would affect the aerodynamics of the bullet. To me it seems common sense but I'm a nobody.

I haven't bought it yet. I got a couple guns I need to sell first before I buy this one because I think scope and all its probably gonna run me around $1600-$1700. I found it while searching for long range guns on the web.

If it's the 140gr, it's the ELD-M.

If u start cranking up the knob past 10x ur really going to need a high quality upper end scope like a Leupold VX6 or a Swarovski.

Just because a optic company makes a 6x20 does not mean they should .
