I have two left-handed 30-06 and I I'm considering having one of them barreled to a 6.5-06
I considered having it changed to a 280 but since I have a lh in 7x64 there wasn't much point in that does anyone have any experience with the 6.506

pretty much a twin brother of the 6.5-284,,,I was considering barreling my 25-06 to 6.5 but since I have the 6.5x47 I am leaning towards a 284 or a 280,,

Years ago in the late 80`s my first custom deer rifle was a 6.5/06. I called Hart barrels to ask about twist rates for various bullets, got a super friendly guy on the phone who was quite helpful. I ended up ordering a 9 twist, and the subject came up about the cartridge. I told him I was going to build a 6.5/06, he said that is what he hunted with which kind of suprised me and was encouraging. I asked who should I ask for on my return calls, he said ask for PJ. I asked him was he part of the Hart household, and answered I guess you could call me the head of the household.....the owner of Hart Barrels. I think you would be quite happy with that caliber and chambering.

If I were going to stay with the long action I would go to 25/06. Why? The 6.5/06 is not going to be that different than the 30 cal. Going to the 25 caliber will give you a more versatile rifle to go along with the 30 cal. Just my thoughts. The 25 or 26 Nosler would also be a good option.

I don't need another 25-06 and from what I've read the barrel life on the 26 nobler is only a few hundred rounds

Hadn't heard that about the barrel life on the Nosler. Is it hearsay or documented somewhere? I was considering one later on and I guess I need to look a little more closely.

I' becoming more of a 6.5 fan every day as I continue to try various loads in my Creedmoor. I'd have no problems going to a 6.5-284 as was suggested above. Although I have never owned one, the 6.5-284 dominates F-Class 600 and 1000 yard match events in a lot of locations.

the BC on 6.5 bullets is so far ahead of .257 bullets the 6.5-06 would be light years ahead of a 25-06,,and that is from somebody that has shot a 25-06 since I was 10 years old 39 years ago,,I would rather have a 260 as a 25-06

Did some research and you're probably correct about the barrel life. Not a lot of long term data out there, but based on the case size and velocities they are running it wouldn't surprise me at all.

I have not seen Hawks' review, but I take everything he says with a grain of salt. Their "reviews" are sometimes a lot of personal likes and dislikes. I've read a few over the years that were totally off base.

Well I did it I sent the gun off yesterday and I ordered the dies. in a few weeks we'll see what I come up with

that should be a wicked round,,6.5 mm bullets are hard to beat for BC,energy and lack of recoil in one package,,

I hardly think the bc is going to make a hill of beans difference in a deer rifle. If so, why not go all out and do it right with a 6mm.
