5.56/223 factory ammo question

If someone were to acquire an AR-15 and wanted to establish a multi-purpose collection of ammunition for it without handloading, what 5.56/223 ammunition types would you purchase? Uses would be target shooting, hunting and self-defense.

I think 4 or 5,000 rounds of 55 gr FMJ would do the trick. Pick up some 20 round magazines and a caldwell loader. You can jack 20 rounds into a magazine in just a few moments. Highly recommended

Take your 30/06 to kill deer. Save your 223 stash in case you need it.

My selection is Federal Fusion for hunting and self defense and just about any brass fmj for target and self defense. Basically any ammo I can feed when a self defense scenario should arise is what that bad guy will get.

You definitely don't want FMJ bullets for hunting. And I'd not recommend FMJ for self defense either. Remember that you are responsible for the bullet after it leaves the barrel. FMJ has a bad habit of continuing to go places after it passes through the intended target. I'd recommend Black Hills, and the 60 grain VMax is a fantastic all-around bullet for your uses. If you go with more than one brand / load / bullet keep in mind that your POI may move from one to the other. If you want consistency, stay away from "bulk" ammunition. Of course, for just burning powder and not caring where the bullet goes it is fine.

That's a good point. Living in the city, my target shooting options are limited and the rifle ranges in the area do not allow FMJ.

It's a decent drive from Signal Mtn, but Chattanooga Rifle Club does allow FMJ on one of the "plinking" ranges. FWIW.

I shot this Black Hills ammunition for a while in an AR-15 and it is great. Not the cheapest, but it does do well.

x2 for 62gr Federal fusion as a do-all round. High volume plinking would get expensive, is the only draw back. Barnes vortex copper are also a consideration.

I like PMC for plinking/stockpiling, Federal Fusion for deer and Hornady 55 grain VMax for coyotes.

For hunting deer size game with the 223, I personally wouldn't go any less than a 55gr Sierra game King. I use 60gr nosler partitions. For smaller stuff, any ballistic tip or hp style will work. Home defense, I'd use a hp which wouldn't work too well if it hit something else first but if it didn't, your intruder will know something bit his ace.
